My first Age of Sigmar Project

Age of Sigmar has released and I'm planning out my first steps into this crazy new world.
Reading through the PDFs I searched first for an army near and dear to my heart,
Orcs and Goblins Spider Riders.  This army has been my passion and torture for 6 years. I have been starting, quitting, improving, and changing this army over and over again, knowing that at some point, it will get done.  Age of Sigmar made this army rather awesome, and a cohesive fighting force.  So I'm just gonna set out what I have so far. As a disclaimer, this is an establishing shot of where the army is now, so when periodic update posts appear, they will have some precedence.

First, the once and future king, The curse of the spider god. Painted up for the first painthammer challenge, he has become my general and the impetus for the current momentum on this project.

This army will be based on the formation at the end of the Orcs and Goblins PDF "Spiderfang Venom Mob."
Next up will be the 3 units of Spider Riders required by the formation.
This army was made tabletop ready for Waaghpaca this year.  I used these guys with the special character Snagla Grobspit (second from the right on the front rank in red.) Snagla is sadly gone, and so are the days of ambushing this unit in :).  It was a great fluffy fun army to play, and model.  Paint needs a whole lot of help to get it to where it needs to be, but every model has been converted.

Some Daddy Long Legs units that I converted up for a little variety.  I will use them for at least one of the 3 basic units.
The next three units will be Arachnaroks for the formation.  Rules-wise I am immensely pumped that I can take the Webflinger now, since it can move and shoot.  I will actually have to go back in and add it on to the third Arach (instead of the third mage that was painted :) ) We'll see how this goes.

And extra bits and bobs, that have yet to be included in this incarnation as well..

Why Age of Sigmar is Rage..

So.. there's been a lot of talk and text (and shouting and tantrums) about this whole Age of Sigmar thing.  And I for one, totally understand, but probably not for the reason you think.

We're gonna start with a story, and continue with a metaphor, then we'll see where we end up.

Let's start the story with a fresh faced young gamer.  He sees some amazing models in his local hobby shop, and starts staring at the boxes.  Some of them have lasers in them, some have swords, some have tanks, and some have mounted knights.  A quick peek at the price and he realizes that this is a long term commitment.

40k is a bit of a younger choice.. The game is younger, a skirmish based system, and the background is based on the idea of super human warriors cleansing evil from the farthest reaches of the galaxy.   If 40k were a woman, she would be spitting movie quotes, dressing in whitewashed jeans, and look fantastic when you were lucky enough to have her at your side.  Something rather hard to pass up to an impressionable teen.

Fantasy on the other hand is a bit more elegant, the movement more nuanced, fighting with traditional weapons and chock full of ordinary humans simply struggling to survive through the evils of the world. Some of the models at their finest would even feel right sitting within a trophy case between volumes of Hemingway and Sun Tzu in a fine old library.  If Fantasy were a woman, she would enjoy fine art, the theatre, and her clothes would immaculately recall the best of every era of history but updated in a refined, subtle cut and cloth.  With her at your side you feel older, more mature, and adult.

The fresh faced young gamer talks about it with his friends and picks something that appeals to him personally.  After at least some thought, and perhaps a bit of a dabble into 40k, he settles into the warm Warhammer Fantasy embrace. Lonely hours are spent huddled over his models, scraping, assembling and painting his own little corner of the fantasy universe.  Rectangles of wrath plod slowly across the battlefield hoisted over the uneven surface by cut up boxes of Wheetabix or Captain Crunch, with arguments about whether models falling off the "movement trays" constituted cheating, or just accidents of physics.
His army fights battles over countless continents, dueling with the lizardmen in Lustria (the garden behind his friends flat,) before journeying to the World's Edge mountains to assault a dwarven clan in the clear air of a mountain pass (a disused bit of cement about the right size,) and finally being assaulted by a ragged shifting mass of dead flesh in the swamps of Sylvania (a conveniently distasteful rug in the dining room.)
Over the years, the models get nicer, the paint jobs something worth showing to someone other than you mother, and the battlefield elevates to a table or counter of convenient size.  He makes the investment into a grass mat, and some plastic or self made terrain.  This cave over here is not just a cave, it is the home of his terribly painted (and horribly killable) Night Goblin Warboss, Jack the Giant Slayer, conveniently converted from an old plastic multipart goblin kit with a random metal giant hand superglued to the back.
He meets a nice girl and tentatively introduces them to his clandestine love, a collection of plastic and metal lumps that have seen more time invested than his clumsy attempts at wooing.  He explains in stilted terms, the elegance and beauty of the game that has entranced his free time, and patiently waits for her approval.. a fraught few minutes or days until the next date.
The acceptance comes and the hobby enters a new phase.  Journeys to far away lands of Bristol or Chicago to play with other like minded individuals, who accept and encourage his now-licit second love.  He meets, drinks, and ruminates with his mates on his next army.  Over Beers, Shots, and Margaritas (if he's lucky) he discusses life, family and Warhammer.   Armies come and go, editions fall by the way side and life moves on.
Rumblings on the horizon preface an epic move forward.. this is no Storm of Chaos, this is the End Times..  From the first page of Nagash he realizes that everything is in limbo, only because he had the luck to get a copy.  He nervously flips pages and absorbs the story, recalling hints dropped in previous army books, Storm of Magic, and Blood in the Badlands.  He frantically tries to contextualize what's happening when Brettonia is wiped out, Naggaroth is overrun, and Teclis turns in to a heartless tool.
By Khaine he is spent, Ulthuan is gone, the rules have abandoned his lovingly cared for models, and his wife refuses to listen to another word of this warhammer nonsense.  By the time the picture is leaked that spoils the end of the Warhammer World, he hasn't touched his hobby for months, hasn't bought Archaon, and hasn't played a single game.  His game is dying, and he can't stop it.
Finally he hears rumours of new fantasy models, new things to order, and maybe rekindle his hobby. This is the last chance to set things right, but the first glimpse is of round bases.  As the box set hits, he realizes Warhammer is gone, replaced with this painted pig called Warhammer: Age of Sigmar.  This is not the game he fell in love with.  Where is the elegance, the ranked units, the flanks and rear that he spent untold hours ogling while contemplating his next inch forward.  Where is the customization, the personalization, the land of Sylvania??
He has new rules for every unit, and they're even free, but where is the game he loved?  This game smacks of 40k, with its' round bases, sigmarines, and skirmish movement.  What the hell happened?  He chose that refined game that smacked of history and culture over the movie quotes and whitewashed jeans, but now here it is, forcing its' way into his armies.

Unfortunately at this point the story gets the cold hard does of reality.  Warhammer Fantasy was dying.  According to sources, Fantasy sold less than hobby products for GW last fiscal year.  Including the End Times, Nagash models, and Stormfiends, paint, gravel, and brushes made more money for GW.  However, Business reality doesn't break the honest reality of gaming.

Many players started playing fantasy before they got married, had kids, graduated college, high school or even primary/grade school.  I personally have spent double the time in the same house with chaos warriors, demon princes, and spider riders, than I have with my wife.  Warhammer has been a constant when life has not.  This is the point.  It's why I chose this hobby.

Age of Sigmar is not Warhammer 9th edition (at the very least, not yet.)  People are choosing to play a new game this time, not simply continuing with the old, and it is a choice.  In a very real sense, people are choosing a divorce from this new game, by staying with the old.  When you take a 25 year relationship, and change the way it looks, feels, and plays, it will hurt.  Real emotional pain, from a hobby, real life intruding into your fantasy game.  It sucks, and there can be no good explanation.  Only the truth.

And the truth is, fantasy was dying, and maybe still is dying.  The system, the models are on life support, and making hard choices is never not stressful.  But there is good news.

Warhammer is dead, but the hobby is not.  If you need a ranked battle game, there are options out there, like Kings of War, Warthrone, or any of the previous 8 editions of Warhammer.  If you need a hobby, only the bases have changed.  If you need the community, it is still there, and will continue to be there as long as GW releases models, but therein lies the rub.

If you don't like Age of Sigmar, I understand, I do.  The driving force behind Warhammer is and always will be the models.  You aren't going to stop that.  No amount of rage, swearing, or burning armies on youtube is going to change that.  GW will produce models as long as they can make money on it.  The sad truth is, they weren't.  Something had to change.

Warhammer could have just been let go, producing plastic kits until the last mold was broken, or the power to run the press was too expensive.  Warhammer could have been folded into 40k.  Lizardmen counting as Tau mercenaries, Dwarfs called Squats, and High Elves counts as Eldar.  This didn't happen.

Warhammer was given something, as opposed to nothing.  This fact alone speaks volumes.  Multiple someones in GW care about fantasy.  Someone cared enough to speak out against the abandonment of our hobby, and won.
If you hate Age of Sigmar, I understand, I hated 8th.  I hated super spells that killed units in a single dice roll, armies of five models on the table, and Demon Princes.  I hate things about Age of Sigmar too.  I hate the loss of the look of massed fantasy, the choice in characters, and the option to have a BSB on my Spider Goblins. But there is one truth that has yet to be discussed.
Without Age of Sigmar, there is no possibility of Warhammer 10th edition, or 11th.  But, the hobby is made up of people, who are also going through a transition, hoping for a future for their hobby, and more models to paint.  You can pull your models out from the cupboard, brush them off, and play with them like nothing happened.  You can't do this with a community.  You can destroy it with snarky remarks, obnoxious play, and old fashioned swearing.  And if 10th or 11th edition ends up being something that appeals to you, you might be in need of people to play it with.  So the next time you feel like dogging on someone for staying with 8th, or moving on to age of Sigmar, remember that there might be a time when you're both playing the same game again.

So I managed to crack my rib the other week while cycling (yes I should be banned from using bikes!!!!) which has put a serious dent in my exercise regime on the run up to my wedding. Really gutted about this to be honest and it is bloody sore!!!

What it has meant however is that I am not sleeping very well and so doing a lot more hobby! So I thought I would share some pictures of grey plastic Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals and a wee game we played the other night! Also built 2.5 boxes of AoS Stormcasts!

GW killed WFB - what do I do now?

Warband/Army combat game
So GW has killed off the Old World and ended Warhammer Fantasy Battles as a game, to be fair they did so in pretty spectacular fashion but at the same time people felt they were gouged for the £200 needed to buy the book under which this happened.

Instead we now have Age of Sigmar. I’ve not played it yet, I’ve read the rules (insert OMG only 4 page rant here if that’s your thing), and I do want to play it.  Checking out my local club reaction there has been a mix of “it’s not as good as 8th”, “it’s a fun game but not for tournaments”, “it needs army selection rules” and countless other variants of that.  It seems that the majority are heading down the route of “lets apply some of the packs of restrictions which are floating around on t’internet” already.

Broadly I don’t mind comp but I think people need to get out of the mindset of this is unbalanced until they have properly played out all the options of the book and actually we have a few armies updated to match the new rules (not just the get you by warscrolls which are likely to have issues due to volume having to be turned out in one go).  I can’t help but feel any comp will still be harking back towards 8th ed WFB in part regardless of how it would play out under the AoS system.

But I didn’t come here to talk about AoS, I came here to talk about other games.  Plenty of people are taking the major changes as an opportunity to look elsewhere, when previously they were sticking with what they knew and loved, and it happens that we’re in an age of vast numbers of new games having hit the market in the recent past and a lot of these games seem to have really tight rules.
I'm a big fan of many games and can heartily recommend trying out other games.

Mantic mass battle game
Kings of War – Starting off for those harking back to 8thed and wanting a ‘massed battle’ game there is the 2nd edition of Kings of War from mantic.  Clearly these guys knew what was coming in some regards, they’ve picked up pretty much exactly where GW left off their original game has moved more towards what WFB was with more in depth magic items, character fit out etc.  Rules have only just dropped and I’ve not played yet but seems like the obvious place for people to jump over to.
Steampunk warband combat game
Warmachine & Hordes – It’s probably the most established game outside of GW.  Designed from the ground up to be a competitive experience the rules are very tightly written and work well.  It is probably starting to suffer a bit from bloat due to its age.  At outset the factions were all clearly themed down a particular route but over time they’ve all got more strings to their bow until now they can mostly do similar things to each other (not 100% true but broadly).  Depending on viewpoint it does suffer a little from supposedly being a game of large smashy robots & mosters but actually best played with vast screeds of infantry.
Warband+ combat game

Wrath of Kings – A new kid on the block which actually felt like it was dead on release but is now getting some support.  Similar to AoS and WM&H it’s a higher model count round base game with a relatively cool set of models and what looks like a reasonably solid ruleset.
Pew pew mother trucker
40k – Yup GW still makes other games it’s not just AoS all the time.  Obviously you’ve gotta like guns & pew pew for this to appeal but it’s cool models and solid enough ruleset.  Obviously as a GW game people will point at it being massively unbalanced and the ability to min-max army build and break it.
Dark age (?) warband combat game
Saga – Historical (dark ages?) warband game.  Armies all have basically the same statline and 3 choices of troops but a cool ‘battleboard’ system for layering special rules on top which gives the factions their own unique feel.
Wild west steampunk gothic horror skirmish game
Malifaux – I think people are calling Wyrd the 3rdbiggest games company (suspect battlefront may disagree but that’s historical WW2 stuff rather than a made up setting so maybe gets ignored for ranking of these things).  Malifaux is a small model count skirmish game in terms of what you have on the table, but the force selection rules means you’ll soon enough end up having most of a faction in your case every time you play.  Scenario driven, skirmish game with good depth to what models do and a relatively unique card based mechanic.
medieval combat/football skirmish game
Guildball – A new kid on the block but one that has really caught on quickly (in the UK for sure) it’s a skirmish combat game with an objective built in (scoring goals).  It’s loosely based on medieval football and the rules are very tight, the designers were hardcore WMH players so brought that tightness of rules to this set.  From my playing so far it has great depth too.
Anime Objective skirmish game
Relic Knights – Anime styled skirmish game, attempts to get the feel of anime combat with power ups, counters and move hit move game style.  Again objectives built in to core design but suffers a bit from the balance on them not being great.  Uses a card deck mechanic rather than dice too all based around collecting certain colours which are tied to your faction to power up moves.  UK tournament scene is starting to grow.
Futuristic skirmish pew pew game
Infinity – Futuristic setting and a complex ruleset where models activation often triggers overwatch style actions from the opponents so a very interactive turn sequence.  Not one I know a lot about because of the complexity of the rules but seems to have really taken off of recent since the latest edition dropped this year.
Fantasy/realworld crossover warband game
Darklands - Mierce Miniatures is due to release the 2nd edition shortly, I don't know anyone that played 1st ed but they've done a great job of advertising this one and with the many kickstarters to get their models out there it seems to have gained some traction.

This is the list I’ve pulled together off the top of my head without any digging around.  I don’t play all of them but have tried most at some point (never played infinity, Saga or wrath of kings but tried all the others).  There are doubtlessly games I’ve missed off the list (Bushido & Dropzone Commander immediately spring to mind) which have a following but haven’t ever quite hit the big time that could be great games.

So for those of you disappointed by the AoS release and looking for a new fix hopefully this helps get your juices going to get into your next game/project.

And now for something completely different..

I wrote some fluff for my application to Forge World.  It's a bit of a rainy Friday here, so I thought I'd just throw it online :)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.  It is a tainted place this, though most do not believe it. They feel simply a chill, a foreboding itch that bores into the mind destroying peace.  The ragged forms of Men, Dwarves, and other races alike scuttle through the shadows glancing askance though no ambush is possible.   They feel it.  I can see they feel its memory, but they cannot speak it.
The blackness of this pass is deeper than the darkness of even the caves of the Night Goblins.  In those at least, a torch would bring light, casting a shadow of hope upon the rock burrows.  In this pass the light dare not shine.   It is confined to only what can be seen of the sky, a taught string of color.   These walls are an etching of death to the eyes.
Only I remain to witness and bear the violence of this place, though few will listen.  They mock me by heeding my name for it, but not my warnings.  A small morsel of the tale is this. It was here that the armies clashed. A mighty throng of brave and proud Dwarf clans, hearts set for battle.  An Empire force mustered from the provinces with haste.  They faced a multitude of Orcs and Goblins vomited forth from the depths themselves.  The impact of their battle shook the mountains as the peaks loosed their grip and fallen boulders extinguished the hapless.  Chaos does not contain what happened here, but it serves to define it in words.
Each boulder that fell formed an island of stillness within the raging battle.  The battle line soon shifted to contain these defensive barriers with stout Dwarf warriors and Empire swordsmen forming shield walls between them; hacking and slashing at the Goblin fodder forced to the vanguard.  After a time, the battle settled to a sedate pace with fighting occurring only in a thin line between the solid bulwarks.  As the Dwarfs and Men took the time to reset their war machines and bring up black powder and ammunition, the battle settled into a routine.
It was then that they came, these mighty heroes of the age.  The Dwarf Slayer, he who had sworn to Grimnir to slay his shame with his death, howling as he attacked the Orc Warboss, who had pledged to destroy all with tooth, and claw, and spike.  The Empire Captain, sword clashing with forlorn vengeance against the Night Goblin Boss, mounted upon a beast of muscle and violence and armoured in the metal remnants of his defeated foes.
There was one then, a Night Goblin Shaman who had risen to a position of some power among the goblins, I called him the Black Flame.  He is the pawn who drew me into this tale, and I have such stories of our past, but suffice to say, it pains me still to think of his form.  He was wreathed in a thick and languid black smoke as he advanced to his death.  I saw him make his way to a particularly large Squig.  I believe the vermin referred to them as Gobbas.  It was grotesquely corpulent, and the chains binding it thrummed in their tension as the Black Flame drew near.  With a mighty lurch the Squig swung forward and swallowed the Goblin whole, wisps of smoke marking his disappearance.   The monster began thrashing about, his acidic bile spraying the hapless Night Goblins nearby.  The chains shattered with an audible crack as a shrill
tittering giggle echoed in the pass.  The Gobba became wreathed in smoke, pouring from its’ mouth and eyes until it exploded with a terrible silence to shatter the goblin army in its midst. The Black Flame shot into the sky, his smoking wreath increasing in size and density as he flew higher and higher.  He became a comet of Blue and Green smoke, pulsing with a terrible intensity before all was shadow.  I flinched at the sight of my former master, and the battle ceased as all light was extinguished from the pass.
With an avian shriek the light pierced our sight once more as he dove into the alliance of Men and Dwarfs, screaming the words of a spell in an immortal voice.  His impact was preceded by a lance of darkness.  The absence of light enveloped him and then spread with fiendish speed and intensity up the walls of the pass.  It reached me and I saw a rich blue film coat my vision and felt the nails melt in my flesh, but my ears.  My ears heard the flame and crackle of marrow and flesh.  My ears heard the explosion of stone bursting in terror. My ears heard the death of three armies.  In that moment I became other.
To this day I cannot know when I became myself again.  I know not if it was day or night.  In jet stillness I placed one foot before the other. After a time I came to a place where I heard water.  I felt for purchase and washed my face in it. My sight returned.  I watched as the filth flowed with the current.  It filled the water with a sooty film, and fish jumped from its touch.  As they entered the air, their bodies writhed and changed growing eyes and wings and mouths before death came for them all.  Their bodies melted as wax to the flame and then the filth was gone.  I remained.  I remained with my memories.  I cast my eyes behind me, and saw then the residue of the battle.  I had but stumbled from the entrance of the pass.  It stood before me now, a straight and clear path.   There were no boulders; no birds feasting on corpses and no memory of the event save for the noisome vapor, an echo of the Black Flame’s power.  How long I stood there staring into the silent depths, I know not.
Now I have returned, penitent and confused to the brink of my nightmare.  I stare once more into the depths of this place, this place now known as Black Fire Pass.  You have asked me for my tale, and so it shall be.  But look upon this defile of ice-black glass and know that I tell the truth.

Inspirational Musings.. Silhouettes

$

Miniatures are designed to have a specific purpose.. be it look menacing, silly, or just plain sexy, one of the main tools in a sculptor's palette is the silhouette.  The silhouette of the miniature should give you an idea of the scale, passion, and energy that a sculpt possesses.  The silhouette in essence forms the lines that a miniature is painted within, and it must be interesting from every angle.
"Doctor Ood" by Curtis Shoemake
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/7692
Doctor Ood does something interesting with the presentation.  It focuses the viewer on one set of angles.  All from the front, with a flat (very nice) painting as a backdrop.  One ace thing about the main picture here is that the figure itself has been posed in the silhouette of a mountain on the backdrop. This background triangle not only helps to focus the viewers' attention on the head of the fig, but at the same time draws attention to the alien shape of the head, with the tentacles filling out the triangle of the mountain.  The call box itself is askew, and looks alien to the backdrop, jutting out of the mountain range, while the Ood is the same color scheme as the land itself, almost including the landscape itself into the silhouette of the mini.  Top job of setting the miniature in the world.

"Out in the Dark" by  Thorsten Wachtmeister, "Scar"
                                        http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/7691
Thorsten has made some very nice choices as well in this diorama.  His backdrop is sculpted and painted in the same palette of colors as the figures.  However, each figure has its' own specific setting due to the color choices.  On the monk figure the lantern shares its' yellow tones with the robe, floor and urns.  Tying them in visually to the figure, and isolating the figure within the piece.  The mages' red is echoed in the ivy to her right, placing her to the opposite in the setting.  These abstract "extensions" of the silhouette allow the two figures to be isolated personalities within the same picture.
Note as a bonus that each angle places each figure blocking a line or edge and again focusing the viewer on the minis themselves.  (See how in the third picture the mage's silhouette interrupts the metal banding of the left door, while in the second picture it is the monk whose silhouette interrupts it.)
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/7705
And last we have Vorag here.  Francesco has done an immense job of defining the character with fantastic painting, but he has added a secondary element that I'd like to focus on.  It's that tree in the background of the first picture.  Visually, that tree extends the silhouette of the figure, making the action of the pose shift forward, despite the huge freaking axe that should weigh the action in a backwards motion.  In the second picture, the tree is almost non-existent, due to the angle.  It makes one of Francesco's great choices on this model rather apparent. By placing all of the brighter colors on the human figure, and laying a darker color on the axe and tree, he has made every angle have forward motion.  Rather impressive feat for a tiny tree eh?  Even the smallest shape can truly enhance a beautiful miniature.

#AoS Narrative Tournament Scenario Ideas

$
0
0
So the Age of Sigmar is upon us eh? According to Teh Internets, Warhammer is no more, tournaments are the dustbins of history, and your models are more worthless than a Greek bank (how's that for topical?)

Scenes such as this with vast open spaces and ranked units are forlorn and forgotten.

On the plus side, Age of Sigmar is a boon for narrative gaming, the strongest system so far to live out the stories of mythical defiance, defeat, and good old failure.  What if we tried to make a tournament that plays to that strength?  I (in my admittedly terrible gaming knowledge) propose a few ideas for tournament scenarios driven by  narrative.  Below are my first time out ideas.  Please feel free to comment or improve.

1. The Settlers
This scenario requires a unit to be designated as "Settlers." This unit must have 1 wound per model, can be no more than 30 models, and cannot possess the fly special rule. The "Settlers" unit gains the following special rule.  Any friendly model within 3" may successfully take a magic or shooting wound inflicted to the target unit on a D6 roll of 2+.  The objective of this game is for the Settlers unit to move off of an opposing players board edge.

2. The Scouts
This scenario requires a unit to be designated as "Scouts." This unit must be equipped with a shooting attack.  Instead of Shooting Weapons, this unit is equipped with far seeing technology and may not attack with Shooting Weapons this game.  This unit is tasked with searching for a specific artifact known to be in possession by the opposing army.  Once a turn this unit may target an enemy unit for a search.  Once a unit is targeted it counts as having been "Searched." No hit or wound roll is required.  Once three units have been searched roll a d3.  The unit that was "searched" first is chosen on a 1, second on a 2, and third on a 3.  The unit that is rolled possesses the artifact.  If your army destroys this unit before the end of the game, they have achieved the objective.  (Note that if the unit rolled was destroyed prior to the roll, the artifact is lost (you were too busy killing to notice.)

3. The Pack Rat
This scenario requires a unit to be designated as the "Pack Rat."  The Pack Rat unit must possess the Monster Keyword.  This unit holds the entire wealth of your army, and as such makes any friendly unit wholly within 12" immune to Battleshock.  For the duration of the game, the Pack Rat may not be killed, but for every wound inflicted on it, loses some of its' treasure.  Keep track of how many unsaved wounds were inflicted by the opposing army and compare with your opponent at the end of the game.  The player ho inflicted the most wounds on their opponents "Pack Rat unit wins the objective.

4. Underground Battle.
This scenario is fought deep underground, and as such, has the following special rules.  Models with the Fly Special rule lose any and all benefits, and their movement is reduced to 4".  Any shooting attack has a maximum range of 6" due to the low ceiling, and low visibility.   Any model within 3" of the table center may attempt to start a bonfire on a 2d6 roll of 12.  The player who successfully lights the bonfire first achieves the objective.

So I’m being a bit of a hobby butterfly and I need to get some structure to my (hobby) life lol! So in classic overly organised manner I will put down a short list of my hobby plans for the last few weeks on the run up to my wedding so I can fail and enter a shame spiral!

  • Finish painting my Guildball models (3 part painted, should finish this week)
  • Paint my Darklands Guthwulf, base started.
  • Paint my Necron BFG Fleet, needs washed, dry brushed and deitails picked out in blue and stone.
  • Spray and base my AoS Sigmarite army.

Hopefully will get this all done by the 14th of August

Woo! So at last my OCD is satisfied and I have finished my Guildball team (stage 1 of the equally OCD HobbyPlan I put out yesterday). It’s taken a bit longer than I wanted (due to procrastination and distraction by new shiney) but I am happy with how the team has come out. Looking forward to trying out the game, there are quite a few of us up here now with teams so maybe we can get a small tournament going at Common Ground Games (http://www.commongroundgames.co.uk/) in the not too distant future:

Mierce Minatures Darklands: Guthwulf Creoda Review

Last night I had a bit of a power painting session and also finished my Mierce Minatures Darklands Anglecynn Guthwulf. Lovely model, with incredible detail, the resin is certainly not finecast and is actually quite hard so you can file it down and tweak it without fear of slicing straight through the model. I had to fill a few gaps and cut out some of the injection points inside the fitting locations but I would much rather this than having to do it on a visible surface. There were a few mould lines but also easily fixed with a small file. It is definitely a more complex model in terms of tidy up than GW plastic kits but that is to be expected. (some pics below of the tools I used and stage by stage pics of the build and bare resin.)

In all honesty though this is not a terrible thing, Darklands doesn’t appear to be a large scale game (30 models seems a very big game) so spending a bit of love and attention building your models gains you more bang for your buck.

Painting wise this was pretty straight forward. I wanted the Guthwulf (until I get a Maegenwulf) to be my pack leader and as such I wanted his colourings to stand out so went with a white wolf fur theme. Really quick to do, spray grey, dry brush light grey, dry brush white, pick out some recesses with black or brown wash, done! Basing was pretty standard for me (I need to mix things up!) and the metals/blue were really quick and easy. The blood is just GW technical paint Blood for the Blood God! I might go back and add tribal tattoos once I understand the story behind Darklands more.

Anyway let me know what you think guys, I’m looking forward to painting up the rest of my Anglecynn force once it arrives later in the year and the start of 2016 (kickstarter models). The guys up here are super pumped for it atm and can’t wait to start playing!

Guild Ball Butchers: Boar

Following on from Rich's finished (in ridiculous time) Guild Ball Fisherman team, I thought I'd share some of my much slower WIP on my Butcher's team. I've been accumulating these guys for a couple months now, but had only got as far as building and priming the first 5. Decided to kick off with the big fella Boar as I wasn't 100% sure on my colour scheme, and he is mostly flesh!

Thought I'd go for a Red/Orange/Brown/Cream theme, but still was hoping to end up with a dirty/bloody look. Also, played about with my new Flower & Heather tufts for a bit of contrast (from Tajima on Ebay). The bases are the resin inserts from the Kickstarter I picked up from a dude on Twitter. I wasn't part of the KS so these guys are all metal models. Think I may have preferred resin models, as these guys are quite soft and bendy. The thinner models especially are liable to wee bits coming off after being glued.

Still I'm happy overall with the models and hope to get the other lot painted in next few weeks. Got the GB pitch due to come very soon, and hopefully can get started learning the bloody game! Also, must be strong and not buy another team........Morticians models look very appealing.....

Necron Tomb Fleet: Battlefleet Gothic

So managed to squeeze in some more speed painting the last few evenings on the Necron battlefleet gothic harvest fleet I have amassed (read as got for a steal off ebay!!!) and got them finished! Super quick scheme to match my 40k necrons and probably only too me 3-4 hours total to paint the fleet! Not my best work but not bad considering effort!

Working through my Hobby Plan quite nicely now so just my stormcasts to spray and base (slate, sand, rocks etc).

Hey guys! Super quick shameless plug/Ego boost about the most recent FaceHammer podcast minisode upon which I feature! Was really cool to be invited on to join the guys and talk age of sigmar, hobby and the #PaintingChallenge . I had a great laugh (thank god they edited out our pre and post non PC chat!) with Les and Russ. The rest of the episode is really excellent too (I think I ruined it lol) where Russ and Les go into a more technical, in depth look at their painting style, technique and approach to the Stormcast Eternal model. Some really great tips which I will certainly be testing (note to self, but all the medium).

Anyway check out the show here http://www.facehammer.co.uk/

Guildball - Union Unpainted figs
To do box

For anyone that has been paying attention you’ll have heard on most WFB podcasts, Twitter and Facebook GW slightly threw everyone for a loop in the run into AoS. Ignoring the game side as largely that has taken care of itself the real hit for people is knowing where to put their modelling & painting time. The vast uncertainty around what is changing makes people unwilling to commit to army projects where they might end up wasted so instead many people went ‘on hold’.

If you look through some of the recent posts on this blog you’ll see the impact of that with Rich off painting Guildball, Battlefleet, Darklands, 40k. Scott’s put up some guildball too and generally there has been a dearth of Warhammer content until the AoS painting competition came round.

 Unpainted figs
To do box
Guildball - UnionAs it happens I was on one of my swings into other game systems so I’d shelved the Warhammer projects anyway so this didn’t overly affect me, though I did shelf a couple of my New Year resolutions for Empire and WoC projects. Instead I was focused on Guildball and having a great time with some seriously beautiful miniatures.

Guildball - Butchers

Guildball - Union

But after turning out a couple of teams I just seemed to hit the wall. In part this was down to ‘real life’ TM issues and just lack of time but following on from that even when I did have time I just couldn’t bring myself to pick up the brush. I’m fortunate that it is very rare that I lose motivation this way as I tend to find just flipping to a different project gets me going again and I’ve plenty to be going on with (see my previous post on being a poly-gamer and alternative games). It was a struggle to dig myself out this funk but it finally happened yesterday and in the weirdest fashion.

Partly linked to my NY resolutions and the Fools Daily Challenge (from the Fools Daily podcast) I have a box of figs which is my ‘to do box’. I’m not sure if this actually knocked my motivation as it
was too full or if it was just coincidence but when I pulled it together was around when I lost my urge to paint. In the box were 3 Guildball teams (20ish figs) and about 20 Malifaux figs (a mix of Guild and Neverborn). Actually quite a diverse range of figures, for those that don’t know the two games they have quite varied themes between the guilds/factions, so not usually something that would bother me as a to-do list. Maybe a few too many models given I paint them to a higher standard than I do WFB stuff as I think about it.

On realising I’d hit the wall as such the first thing I did was reassess my needs, I then sold one of my guildball teams onto a friend and I’m contemplating selling on a second. That helps drop the model count but still didn’t get me painting. In the box there were a bunch of Malifaux models which I’ve painted in the past and these were just duplicates I’d picked up in trades. I thought about trying to sell off these but then had the great idea of, why not paint them to sell then as it would doubtlessly improve their value. A great idea... But not one which actually changed what was in my paint queue at all.

There was one model which was in the box that I'd half painted and then got stuck on. It had been basecoated & washed then just felt a bit dull. The model was a reaper bones sculpt but one I'd chopped up a bit to use as a proxy for a Malifaux model. I decided to pull him out and thrown on a few highlights just to get my brush going again. And that was the eureka moment, soon as I got the highlights on the model it came to life and with it the desire to paint everything else! Pic below is before he got based up but that's all done now too.

Reaper Bones - being used as Malifaux Francisco alternative

So these are the guys I'd decided were probably best just sold on. Only now they're painted why bother, lets just put them in the cabinet with the others. Sure why not, stupid brain, but at least it got them painted. Somehow the idea of painting models I'd never use was more appealing than painting models I'd want to use, go figure!

Malifaux - Guild Guards

So that's me and how I've gotten myself back on the painting bandwagon, next up should be to finish off my Guildball Alchemists team and a bunch more Malifaux stuff.  I'm also starting to get an itch to pull out some Warhammer bits again and paint something for that but on a round base, yikes!

Hey guys! so here are the entrants for the second painting challenge! Some amazing work here by the guys! Really brilliant doing these! Only shame was that I think this lost some of the impetus due to the AoS launch, 6 weeks painting time and the Stormcast painting challenge. Next time there will only be 4 weeks from launch to getting your entry in just to keep momentum up :)

Anyway now for the voting, very simple: Choose your favourite (hard part!), tweet your vote to me (@paint_hammer) or as a comment to this blog post. One vote per person please and no self voting ;) Voting will close at 2359 BST on Sunday the 9th of August. Shameless self promotion and bribes are recommended and encouraged!

DISCLAIMER: Please contact me ASAP if anything is wrong, I have missed your entry or to vent #RichHate. Not everyone listened to me and didn’t submit via twitter DM (bad monkeys!!!).

Hello all my name is Stephen Herner or Steve or @HolyHammerHern in twitter verse. :)

I'm super excited to be the latest contributor to this amazing blog. Additionally, I am also humbled to be a part of a community of highly talented hobbyist with a passion for gaming, painting and all things miniature wargaming. I hope I can deliver.

My hobby exploits and adventures are wide spread and as the community moves forward in this new Age of Sigmar world I look forward to all the new possibilities this new game will give us creatively.

Thought you might be interested to see the WIP's from the Painting Challenge for this month and my entry Raticus Mechanicus and his Doom Trike.

(WARNING: LOTS OF PICS AND RATHER LONG)

Early on I thought How about him riding on top of a Storm fiend? Thankfully I was talked out of that idea.

Then I had thought about what I was lacking in my Rats in Hats army and I always wanted another Doom Wheel and so I decide to in that direction.

Last year Wayne Kemp and I chatted about conversion ideas and he mentioned a penny farthing and I almost went in that direction for Raticus but then I started messing around with my bits and stumbled on the Doom Trike concept.

Most of my conversions start like this I build them as I go cutting, scrapping and pushing parts together from my bits hoping for inspiration.

As the trike started to take shape I found 40k Orc parts that would serve as the power source for the tike.

At this stage I faced the most challenging bit. The control console. How would Raticus pilot the Doom Trike across the battle field?

I used every bit I could find hacking away at the Doom Wheel kit and eventually found the right configuration.

Once I had the control console in place I was wondering how it would be mount and how could I add in movement to the model? I grabbed my bits from the Screaming Bell and place the smoke and flames spewing from the tail pipes.

Something was still bothering me about the control console there were enough levers and controls. Hard to tell they are there in the finish pics once these were added I was super excited to my on to Raticus.

Next up I needed to do a bit of sculpting on Raticus I used Apoxie Sculpt on his cloak and green stuff on his warp thrower attachment and his control levers, I don't have a finished pic of the green stuff work before I primed him up for paint :(

Next up was the positioning on the base and I wanted action so canting the Doom Trike was the obvious choice.

Building and converting is just as fun as painting for me but for this particular model I really had a great time painting him up.

Hey guys just a quick post to show my Necron Illuminator Szeras conversion that I entered for PaintingChallenge this month. Been done in my standard speed painted necron paint scheme, super easy and fast! Basically a very quick (but worryingly expensive?!?!?!)  kit bash of the Necron Overlord kit and the AdMech Tech Priest Dominus.

A New Blogger Introduction

A swift introduction to me is perhaps in order. My name is Jonathon Chester and after a recent discussion over twitter I offered my services to Rich to contribute to his extensive blog by joining the ranks. I first started my way into war gaming back with the Lord of the Rings strategy game when I was about eleven back in around 2005 due in part to my obsession with the franchise at the time and the Mumakil kit was an OMG draw for me. After this in 2006 I first picked up 4th edition 40k and became reasonable proficient with my home brew Space Marine chapter but my painting was still very much to be desired.

A while after 5thedition dropped I picked up the Orks and soon became the bane of my local club utilising Blitzkrieg style tactics often running over half their army by turn two or three. One thing looking back though I recognise my painting ability as well as my desire to improve my skills to which I found my current standard of good table top that I continue to this day.

Eventually my run with 40K ended during 6th edition after I acquired a Tau force and whilst I did make use of a unit or two of the power choices (I’m looking at you Ricky the Riptide!) but often my list was a fairly balanced one that made more use of a solid core of infantry and the rest of my army was built to support this with either tank busting or heavy infantry weapons. I found even with this army, which even my opponents said were fair for that army, I just didn’t feel like I was being rewarded for the most part for tactical genius but for being able to roll above average dice and if memory serves me well my Tau in single games still run undefeated. This is when Fantasy caught my eye.

It was the release 8thedition Lizardmen book that caught my eye and my introduction to podcasts such as the Bad Dice and Black Sun podcasts that sealed the deal. Hearing about tournaments which mixed both a competitive and social aspect made me decide to jump in feet first at the deep end and booked my first tournament at Battlefield Birmingham. The result was four losses and a win but I learnt so much and ever since my game got vastly better which accumulated in my first ever best in race this year at Midlands GT with my Warriors of Chaos.

In this time I have also fallen in love with Mierce Miniatures game of Darklands. The instant I looked at this game after getting a free quick starter rulebook from Mierce own Tim Fisher when I was at the Mansfield Maul I fell for it. Looking at the Brythoniaid kindred was what really sealed the deal for me as I have always been partial to dragons and being a faction which upon writing this has three very gorgeous dragons.

Anyway that is a quick introduction to me and for this blog I will be mostly focussing upon Darklands with miniature reviews, the odd battle report and soon a bit of a beginners guide to the game.

Thank you for reading and look forward to writing future articles.
