The Throng Song

With  the Caley Carnage doubles tournament looming I decided it'd be a perfect opportunity to paint up the new Runelord clampack. Have to say it was a lovely model to paint and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I have a big mix of old and new models in my Throng and I'd like the doubles tournament to be the first time my whole force is made up of the new models. Recently, at the Fall of the Old World tournament, I was able to put 3000pts of older, mainly Maruader, models on the table which I was really chuffed about. It was a bit of a slog to get it done as I had to paint 40-odd Dwarfs in three weeks but I'm glad I did it.

I was even happier that I decided to take a no warmachine Strollaz list to the tournie, as a big middle finger to the End Times madness. I had a great time with the list and won 2/3, only coming unstuck 8-12 versus dull, dull Malekith.

To be honest I think if folk aren't having fun playing Dwarfs then they're doing it wrong, you can even have a magic phase now with Ungrim!  Or alternatively you just wait for a comp pack, like the Scottish Open, to come along that allows you add a sprinkle of Tetto'Eko! I forsee more strollaz lists in my future, they're fun to play and it'll be interesting to see how competitive they can be.

I've got another new Gyro to paint for Caley Carnage and after that I think the dwarfs will be off the painting table for a bit since I appear to have decided to paint a new army from scratch for the ETC.

Here's some more pics of the Throng.

Hey guys, super quick blog post with my BSB for Caley Carnage “Schkot Smythe: Veteran Battle Standard of the Kislevite Steppes”. Pretty happy with how he came out, not my best paint job I don’t think though, the blends aren’t as smooth as I would like but I think he is pretty good! Very nice model if an utter bugger to hold and paint due to his daft weight in metal!

PaintHammer Painting Challenge #1: Nurgle Chaos Lord

Hope everyone is well and you've been getting plenty hobby in, I've been pretty busy so lagging behind target!

So the other night Steve W suggested doing a wee blog painting project where several of the PaintHammer Guys all paint the same character model up to the best standard we could then post it on the blog. Idea is that with all the 9th uncertainty we could still kick back, paint something fun, different and challenging to feed our hobby lust. This is kinda like what the FaceHammer and PointHammered boys did recently with the Skaven grey seers and chaos lords respectively. So when Steve suggested it I got thinking that maybe we could expand on this and involve others out-with the blog where by they could join in and submit their models too and we all voted for our favourite.

The goal is to challenge yourself to paint something out of your comfort zone, try a new technique or just try a new paint! The first model will be the awesome Chaos Nurgle Lord with Great weapon. It got a lot of votes as people's favourite clamshell on twitter the other night and I've been dying for an excuse to paint it :) Aim would be for me to do a blog post at the end of the month with all the entrants models shown and let the comments/votes/#RichHate begin!

Rough plan would be as follows:

  • Paint one GW plastic hero kit, starting 1st May with Submission by May 31st. Please avoid historic entries :)
  • Feel free to go nuts and be creative with conversions but please keep the original model as the key focus of your project.
  • Each entrant gains one vote (vote by saying your choice as a comment in the wrap up post) and innocent bystanders can vote too as long as they state their twitter or forum handle
So far we have the following guys signed up (will add to this as people sign up):

Call to War 2015 Army Lists

$

Hi folks, Scott here (@_wee_men). Seeing as I never post on here, I'd thought I would indulge us all in a bit of Friday List Porn for the imminent Call to War tournament.

This is being held in Bristol this weekend, and uses the ETC comp system, where each army is allowed up to 5 comp choices specific to their army book.

There should be a smattering of UK & Europe ETC players at this playtesting their new filth. Trev (High Elves), Les (Daemons) and Dave (Brets) from this Blog are playing too.

Link to the ETC army list comp here

Some cracking/interesting lists in here! Enjoy...........

Warhammer Visions: New Format Review

$

So I got my grubby wee hands on the newly formatted Warhammer Visions (which in essence is EXACTLY what it is) and thought I would put up my a post on it. Ill preface this by saying that I’m a subscriber and have every issue of Visions so hopefully Ill present a relatively balanced point of view. I’m a long time white dwarf reader and I don’t think any one will argue that a lot has changed (mainly for the worse) with white dwarf in the past 10 years. Comparing back is a pretty futile effort so I will focus on the changes from Visions Mk1 to Mk2.

The Good
It is bigger. Roughly twice as large in sheet size from Mk1 which is great for longingly staring at the brilliant golden daemon entries, the old small pages were annoying at best. There are no more double page spreads with terribly lost detail in the centre folds/spine.

The layout is slightly more pleasing to the eye and it flows a little better but it is by and large visions mk1 at 190%.

Paint Splatter is much better in large format, easier to see the details and this will help beginner to medium hobbyists.

Its great for reference on paint schemes and awesome models/conversions (Golden Daemon stuff in particular).

The Bad
The complete and utter lack of actual text content. I’m sorry but having a bubble caption of “This is an “X” with really cool “Y” painted by “Z”” is borderline lazy and not engaging. Really wish they would basically make Visions a monthly version of the weekly where they keep some of the current entries and put all the best articles (rules, bat reps etc) from the weekly into Visions. Keep the new releases from the month (they do need to sell shit after all), golden daemon, readers models, paint splatter and ‘eavy metal.

BlanchSHITsu, sorry I just don’t get it. It’s an aesthetic thing but really not my cup of tea.

The Ugly
Three languages in one publication is utterly unacceptable and just reeks of cost cutting and “great” corporate ideas. Looks terrible and does nothing for the reader. This needs sorted, it is downright terrible. Seriously, sort it out, like now. NOW.

Overall
It is an improvement but it has not fixed the fundamental issues and improved the content. As I said above I am a subscriber and I do like to flick through Visions but if I was an outsider looking in at ourindustry’s publication I wouldn't buy it. Look at the really decent magazines that command the sort of price point that Visions does and you will see the examples of actually decent magazines(I buy the below regularly):

Edge
Monocole
Wired

These three are excellent magazines and give me hours and hours of reading. I’m generally finished with Visions in 30 minutes and glance back at it occasionally (once a year maybe). All this said it is an improvement (no price increase by the way!) and as long as they continue to improve I will be happy.

Verdict
4/10

“Errr....we changed the light bulb but the house is still on fire, sorry bro”.

Wood Elf Waywatcher Lord

I finished off a the Wood Elf Waywatcher lord over the weekend.

This is a model I had been looking forward to painting for a long time as the pose is so dynamic. It is also massive compared to the other wood elves, especially the Waywatchers.

I would say it is not a particularly easy model to paint well. The armor is all wooden sticks that need highlighting, and the face is covered so is very small and hard to reach. Also the model is old, so some of the detail is missing and needs to be painted on. I stuck with the tried and tested greens and browns so it blends with my current waywatcher unit, but I have not done any freehanding on the cloak yet. It is blended to a reasonable standard. I think if I come back to it later I would like to change the inner lining of the cloak and also revisit the quiver on his back. I wanted to string the bow as well,  but the angle of the bow and arm is all wrong, which I didn't notice so would be difficult to correct now.

It is still a wicked cool model though!

So I managed to finish my nurgle lord. I'd done most of the work on the 1st of the month, but needed a decent day where I had the light for photos. First think I thought when I saw him was "executioner". A lot of green stuff later and he was ready. The tree and skulls are from the citadel wood. Not sure where the stump is from. The fleshy head is from the goblin archer kit.

I decided to go for a display block, since I had one. They're quite fun to use. Definitely give a good effect. The model is only pinned, not glued, so may try selling him with the block and a gaming base at the end of the month.

So I finished my Painting Challenge the other day! Fancied trying out a few things different with this model, notably the new GW Technical paints (all have been used on this model) and creating a unit filler (have never done this before). I’ll be honest and blunt, I’m not usually the biggest fan of unit fillers but in principal I think they are acceptable when they enhance a unit aesthetically, have reasonable effort put into them and tell a story. Conveniently this also helps me with my painting commitments for Caley Carnage as I have run out of empire character models for my knight unit (not using plastic empire knights damn it!).

Anyway so the Nurgle Lord, I loved this model, was an utter joy to paint (no conversions at all), all parts were easily accessible and great to highlight. I used Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust on the steel, Nilliac Oxide on the copper/bronze, Nurgles rot on the good bits and blood for the blood god for the…errr blood? All of these paints are just excellent and I cannot recommend them enough! I liked the difference in painting this model to what I normally do, very muted (only one colour blue used on the cloth) and the effects paint providing the spot colours that make the model stand out. This paint scheme would really benefit from a lighter basing colour (snow for example) to make the model pop.

The story of the piece is Valten yelling “Come at meh bro!!” to the nurgle lord while the empire cav charge to support him (you will see this when the model joins the knight unit). Anyway I hope you like it, I will post this along with the other entrants in one complete post for voting at the end of the month. Can’t wait to see what everyone produces as Joe’s executioner is simply excellent!

Hey guys! The PaintHammer team expands further with the joining of our over the pond, american correspondent Paul (@pjschard on the twitters)! Paul is a really great converter and modeller and I am really excited to see what he brings to the blog! Paul has a huge twitter presence, post pictures of some really inspiring models and paint jobs which he will now be also duplicating on the blog as a weekly roll of some amazing model pictures. I think this will really be a great development for the blog and will make finding some truely awesome models easier. This will hopefully be easily navigated using the "labels" (tags) function on the right hand side of the blog, these will all be labeled "Inspiration" for future reference :)

Last night Natalie was out and William was asleep so I settled down to watch Star Wars and finish my entry for the Painting Challenge. I decided to combine the Nurgle Plague Bearer herald with the iconic Chaos Lord model that we were all painting. I didn't want to change the model too much, so I stuck with a simple head swap and added in the little Nurgling back banner. I added a horn to the left shoulder as well to balance the models silhouette as well.

The model was undercoated using Nurgling green. I didn't shade the model - instead I went straight into highlighting up the flesh with a mixture of Rakarth Flesh and Nurgling green plus white. The Rakarth Flesh doesn't really lighten the green. It just makes it look a bit more palid, which suits the scheme I was shooting for. Once the skin was highlighted up I then used purple washes in all the folds to bruise the skin up. If you want to see how this is done check out the Putrid Blightkings video on the GW channel on Youtube.

The horns are just a dark brown highlighted up, and the armour is green, agrax and then edge highlighted carefully. I decided to use blood for the blood god in all the sores, but also I added in some sharp white highlights to reflect the gore a bit. And I managed to get some of the Vallejo Fluro Green on the drip to. The axe was done using the mettalic black from vallejo and edge highlighted with gun. I also slapped on a few blobs of Typhos corrosion in places on the metal, mostly focused around the holes.

The base was a 40mm Resin base I had lying around. Its just carefully drybrushed up and then all the foliage and plants come from a Cornwall based company called Tajima. These are supposed to represent the garden of nurgle poking up around the models feet.

I also used a bit of sponge to weather and chip the armor paint work. I find this works well if you ise it very sparingly.

Overall I am extremely happy with how this came out, and it was great fun painting something that wasn't needed for a tournament or an army! Hopefully we will do another one of these in a month or two.

If anyone has any questions about the model slap em in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @stevewren

Empire Characters Painted!

Hey guys just a super quick post showing some of the Empire characters I have finished recently for Caley Carnage!! Let me know what you think!

Here Comes the Cavalry!!

So Cally Carnage is fast approaching and I’m in the last phase of preparations for my first tournament with the Empire and so with that in mind I have finished my unit of 12 Inner circle knights with great weapons. I have really tried my best to raise my painting standards with this army and I think this unit has come out how I wanted. I treated each model as a character (which they are lol) and spend 10+ hours each model. I think it has come off really well and is probably the best unit I have ever painted.

I have cheekily inserted my Painting Challenge Nurgle Chaos Lord model as a unit filler. I wanted to try and make the unit “filler tell a story” like how Steve Wren described in his HeelanHammer interview with his basing. Byron Orde also does some similar with his interlocking scenic basing. I haven’t reached that level but I think it does fit in as a swirling combat. I have tried to set up so that it looks like the knights are rushing to support a once isolated Valten, charging past to prevent dastardly Chaos warriors from interfering with the challenge. Speaking of which one knight with a great weapon has been posed to look like he is about to have a cheeky swing at the nurgle lord as he rides past! I think the unit looks like it is charging at speed which I am quite happy with.

I may in the future paint up an army of warriors posed similarly rushing to meet the knights in a similar colour scheme to Nurgle Chaos lord.

I do think that the unit filler is a bit too large going forward and would work better on a 50x50 but for now I am happy. As this is my first unit filler and first completed empire unit please let me know what you guys think. Will be starting the daunting project of painting 80 halberds to the same standard soon and want to know if people think the paint scheme works before I lose a silly number of hours on the project lol!

Inspirational Musings.. Basing as an Art

Basing can obviously make or break a miniature, but there is an art to setting a miniature in a scene without overwhelming it..
"Skaven Grey Seer" by John Margiotta "BloodASmedium"
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/7232

There are some pretty simple pointers that are well executed in this Grey Seer.   The first is to not obstruct the direction on the miniature..  The clam pack mini has a great motion to the left and John has successfully avoided the first major blooper.  The basing is busy, but also flows in the direction of the motion.  Weighted visually with a large column piece, the base gives the viewer a physical weight to accompany the Seer's motions, immediately making the mini feel "balanced" despite being a smaller miniature on a larger base..
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1373

Ysra is one of my favorite female sculpts of all time... (I need to pick one up) So the choice of this miniature may be a bit biased.
The basing Artem has finished this miniature with literally creates a slice of the world this character lives in.  He successfully navigated blooper number two.  The miniatures' color scheme is noticeably different from the background.  Even with the abundance of detail and color on the rock, ground and tree, Yrsa remains the absolute center of attention.  The basing serves as a background, not a second focal point, which allows the viewer to see the mage first, and the natural setting second.  A bonus is the echo of the tree branch with Yrsa's outstreched arm, which gives the piece the same feel of motion as the previous grey seer.

"Tribute of the Fallen" by Rafael García Marín (Volomir)
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1501
Rafael has created quite an impression with his "Tribute." Bloopers one and two have been successfully avoided.   The first is navigated by placing a large space for the eye to "rest" by having the large rock largely devoid of interesting detail. In a piece with so much detail, the visual rest is necessary so as not to overwhelm the viewer.  The second blooper is avoided by having the details of the base slightly less highlighted, to signal to the viewer where the focus is.  Also note as a bonus, the wave crashing on the rock in the same corner as the gaze of the rider and his mount.
The elf and lion's faces are given a matching facing that grips the viewer instantly.  The banner serves as a secondary setting of sorts that truly allows the rider's face to pop out of toned down color palette.  The "blazing sun" pattern on the banner also frames and echoes the lines of the helmet while the high elf icon creates a halo to hint at the emotion of the scene.

Inspirational Musings.. Giants

                                             "Kurgaal" by Max "Amon" Richiero
                                       http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1379
Centerpiece models really add a visual punch to an army, giving a reason for people to peer closer and find out what else is interesting.  Converted centerpiece models are a double whammy, they stick out and invite closer inspection before moving to another model.  Max has done some amazing work using small details to intrigue the eye and composing his conversions to be balanced with the existing sculpt.  The paint scheme is also very well done, and incorporates a nice blend of subtlety and skill to "sell" the whole model.  Conversions really grip your attention and draw people to the model when done well.  However, there are conversions that can actually draw attention to other models and draw out "their" character.  It's pretty impressive when it can change the way you view a model you've already seen a hundred times.

"The Crow" by Florian "Tuffskull" Weinheimer
                                   http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1749
This little guy from Rackham has so much character already, not much is needed to really "sell" the pose.  The converted giant foot is really a great idea executed wonderfully, adding a David vs. Goliath stance already implied by the miniature.   Adding the butterfly however is just plain brilliant.  It makes you question  whether the "crow" is an overly-ambitious, under developed braggart, or an under ambitious jerk of a little man.   The NMM on this mini is obviously rather well done, and the color composition of the piece draws your eyes to the impending doom of the sword swing, and the butterfly itself.

                                            "Fear" by Max "Amon" Richiero
                                            http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1375
Max has done much the same thing with this piece, as Florian has done with the crow.  I have seen this gnoblar literally hundreds of times.  I always imagined the oversized bravado that filled that tiny helmet.  By clever conversion and setting, the gnoblar has been transitioned into the opposite reaction. The color scheme really is amazingly well done, and the paving stone drawing a line between the giant's hand and the gnoblar ties the two together visually.

The Skybreaker Ogre Tribe

Tyrant with Wizarding Hat
As you will later see, this army was all about the fluff.  I wanted to field an army without a wizard and the army was planned to be a collection of junior hunters. It was to be my final Warhammer purchase way back in 2012, as my first child was due any day.  Alas and alack my days of sowing my Warhammer seed all over the midwest were soon to be a thing of the past.  This fig, balanced on a lonely rock in the midst of reality could be seen as a self portrait of my mind at this moment in time. (Please excuse the waxing pathetic, I haven't written in awhile.)
The Skybreaker Ogre Tribe started with this miniature. It was converted from the pictured Orc Warboss and a standard bull, but the removal of the Night Gobbo immediately unbalanced the fig.  I altered the stance so that it leaned to the right, but I wanted the viewer's eye to be drawn to the Wizarding hat.  I mounted the two razorwings on the shoulder to echo the curve of the hat, and added some books to give some context to the static weapon arm.  I don't think I was successful in completely merging the two models, but am still very happy with the results.  Now I had to come up with a reason for why this guy had birds.  I spent a lot of time planning and converting this guy and he remains my favorite conversion throughout the army.
I HATE PAINTING METALLICS.  I always have and you can see my conscious decision to avoid it in the paint scheme.  It started my obsession with finding new and different ways of painting bone and natural materials which continue to this day.  I should have paid a little more attention to balancing the black between the bottom and top of the miniature, as it looks a bit awkward.  I remember thinking I wanted it to stand out so it had to be black.  Bit of a poor choice there.

Jared the Red
As you might be able to tell, the amount of conversion took a nosedive with this model.  I love the model as is, and didn't feel it needed any conversion to fit with the theme.  I posed him on a 'uge rock!  People love 'uge rocks, and man did I repeat that thought over and over.   I snuck out covertly and bought this as my first character model.  It started a downward spiral of more and more purchases for this army, leaving many shiny new stuffs ignored half painted in the corner as it played terribly in game.  I'm looking at you stonehorn!
Enter Jared the Red.  A small bit of fluff in the Ogre's book refers to the original hunter who wandered off into the mountains and never returned.  This was my attempt to make that miniature happen.  The second razorwing added some visual weight to the left shoulder of the mini.  This guy is my Tyrant in typical games.  I used a lot of the same colors as the wizarding hat tyrant, and decided the rest of the army was going to have black skin and fur cloaks.  The red hair really does have a nice contrast with the the hide and bone theme of the clothing.  I painted a bit of a primitive paint daubing that really drew attention to the face.
Moving on.

Ogre Bull Star
Okay, but seriously guys, this army is all about the fluff!  Well it started out that way.  I painted the bulls as MSU units which really made the 'uge rock aesthetic kinda pretty.  OH MY GOODNESS what happened with that Golgfang conversion! is he standing on a rock while standing on a rock?  OMG the meta. (There is a reason why there is no close up of that BSB, I am too ashamed.) Eventually the army playtested into a Bullstar.  See It's not Ironguts, it's Bulls, therefore my army is fluffy right?
This unit is where the army theme really came together.  The cloaks, the birds and the basing really is much more interesting en masse.  I chose the great maw symbol with wings as my icon, and added blue bodypaint to up the contrast.  Note more Owls from the dryad sprue are on this unit than is truly believable, and the crow from the giant kit on the banner.  I do have close-ups of that firebelly somewhere.. Wait, I said I wanted no wizards didn't I?  Oops.
Ogre Bull Champion.
Who doesn't love being petted on the head?  Totally not Skaw.  He loves being captured by an ogre tribe with two of his best mates on eagles and wandering out of his army book never to be seen again.  Skaw and his compatriots might have been purchased during my army ADD phase, which I was totally out of since my son had just been born #wink.
Skaw was in my bitz box, and provided a rather interesting narrative and hook for my tribe.  I imagined Jared wandered into Athel Loren, searching for yet larger prey to capture.  After witnessing Skaw's ability to control the birds, Jared captured him in order to break those monsters that yet eluded him.  Or he could have just been a sweet mini that I really wanted to paint without needing to buy an army to field him with.  I forget.
Battle Standard Bearer

OMG! Look at that 'uge rock!  IT IS SO 'UGE!!  Umm, this conversion was totally nothing to do with the fact that I had no right leg for this wood elf lord Eagle.  Not at all.  Also I ran out of energy while converting this model, apparently,  because I could sculpt a harness for the bird, but not remove the leaves on its' back.  In all honesty, I knew the conversion was ludicrous,  but I thought it would just be fun.
This guy was just fun to paint and allowed me to add some height to the army. I had an extra saddle and rider from the Stonehorn kit, so I added it to the giant eagle.   He was my battle standard bearer until I converted the Golgfang mini into a foot BSB.  Then he got turned into my ninth mournfang.  Oops.

                     Firebelly

This guy I won ok? It doesn't go against my theme since it was free right?  Man did I love this model, and I was scared to paint the flame.  I'm still scared of that flame.  It looks nothing like flame.  It looks like the firebelly is eating a stalactite that grew out of a vaguely purple testicular mass.  Meh, I tried, and will someday build up the courage to paint up the second firebelly.
A note about the vulture.  I love the vulture.  It is an amazing miniature, especially for the size, but I HATE the legs.  Those legs break, over and over again.  So fiddly.  Here's a secret.  any vulture in these pics is just placed on the arm in question since they have been reglued to said arms so many times, you would swear the arm was just painted with super glue.

Mournfang Riders
I may or may not be so immensely ashamed of my "bone" color scheme.  It is pretty gosh darn terrible.  However, I still really like the colors on the fur, it just pops nicely.  Also, I kinda forgot to mention the mournfangs right?
Look I'll level with you.  I really wanted these kits just for the pistols.  I converted up a really fun unit of maneaters modeled as hunters with two pistols each to use the sniper and poison kit. But, mournfang were just so darn good in game!  I really truly could not resist.  This was to be my final army remember?  Shouldn't I be allowed to win with my LAST army.  Man, I am really good at rationalizing.  Especially when it comes to why I need more models.  Those maneaters got no paint on em, but hey, they got primed.
You knew these guys were coming didn't you?  I really wanted to push the idea that Jared had an army of junior hunters so I used a lot of the hunter bits and cloaks from the stonehorn kit to tie it all together.  I used the helmet from the stonehorn kit on the mournfang on the right, and also the reins too.  Those reins are a pretty sweet bit,  The guy in the middle had a chaintrap.  Emphasis on had. Stupid fiddly bits.  Also look at my scenic basing, those guys fit together so nicely.  In 2012.  I feel like a hipster.

Mournfang Cavalry
I forgot for the last unit, so I'll talk about it on this one.  It doesn't count as a 'uge rock if it's sideways.  Why did I put a banner on that guy?  That was a poor decision.  Also the riders can be switched so I can have either ironfist and weapon or great weapon.  I mean who doesn't want a parry save while mounted? NOT BRETTONIANS.
You can see more hunter bits used here as well as the bret falcon, and one of Skaw's falcons.  Now would be a good time to talk about the basing.  The rocks underneath the minis are all granite, solid granite.  I used a hammer to break them into manageable sizes and then mounted them on the bases.  Tufts were obviously used along with dead grass for contrast.  This army weighs a ton in transport, but I love the look and always get comments.

Ironblasters
Of course I had ironblasters! What do you think I'm all about the fluff?  I did do some conversion to make sure the two were not identical, and these are the only models in the army that do not have birds.  I reasoned the birds were too smart to stay around the cannons, but that didn't stop me from including them. Hey look!  the Ironblaster on the left is not on a 'uge rock!
Wow, I really can't justify including these with my fluff can I?  Jared would not want a cannon to obliterate his trophy kills.  Oh well, I managed to take out three tournaments with this army.  and I really enjoyed playing with them.  For about three months, they were the bees knees!  Then I got so tired of the eye rolling, complaining, and getting beat by better players that I gave up on them.
These guys were my first attempt at a hobby focused army and were moderately successful.  In terms of getting painted, this army happened in three weeks, Success!  In terms of sticking with the original theme I failed miserably.  Also a shelf life of three months, or less, really burned me out on trying to play competitively.  I'd rather enjoy the army long term than try to build to win.  Cheers for reading.

A Thousand Ideas and No motivation.

I've not been very productive of late when it comes to the hobby. I seem to have spurts of motivation where I will paint for a few days on something then weeks can go by where I don't pick up a brush.

My brain however never stops thinking up new ideas that would be really cool/fun/expensive to do. I think one of my main problems is I have too much time to myself and instead of using that time productivity I spend it either playing video games (not a bad thing) or just procrastinating thinking I'll do some painting in a bit, then that bit never comes.

Also with 9th on the horizon, the uncertainty of it all has added my lethargy, weather what I am painting will even be usable in a few months. What I have been able to get painting before my current bout of meh started was a couple of things that were fun to paint and great models.

First was a Skaven Stormfeind.

I was hoping to get 6 of these painted for the Club Challenge in June but again lack of motivation has stifled that and I will no doubt have to borrow them along with the rest of the army lol. My Skaven army is also one such thing that has fallen by the wayside. This new one will be my 3rd army as the first was very quickly and poorly painted to get it on the table as fast as possible. The 2nd, the one I've used most started out as a painting project sadly turned into begin rushed again. Though I am happy with a lot of the conversions I did for this the paint job wasn't that great. I never even finished it as the slaves I used were from the first army. So I started this new one, a Skyre themed army based in an Empire town, but of course what has happened with the end times, will there even be any city's for this new army to be based in when 9th hits?

So now I'm struggling to find the motivation to get this done too lol. So I decided to paint something none GW and settled on this.

From Mierce Miniatures, its a Brythoniaid Gwyddol, Dyndraig of Gwaelod, don't ask me how to say it, only can just pronounce the first word. This was really fun to paint and I do love how its come out. I have a second built ready to paint but haven't quite got around to starting him strangely lol

Lastly on the painting desk at the moment is the Paint Hammer Blog Challenge model. Mine came a little late so haven't started him yet, but I got to work on the base. I've got a few extra things to go on this to make it more scenic but the focus will still be on the main guy.

I may not be able to get this guy finished in time sadly as hopefully I will be moving house in the very near future so everything will be put on hold till then. So thats everything I have started so far, but like the title says I have so many ideas I want to do but no motivation to start. Hears just a few of them.

Clock work ogre army, Had this one for a while but no idea how to pull it off, was thinking along the lines of the Golden Army from Hellboy 2.
A Catachan Imperial Guard army (it will be a cold day in hell when i call it by the new stupid name)
An Ork Speed Freak army. This was my most used army when I played 40k and was so fun using but also making all of the mad max like vehicles for the Orks to ride and blow up in.
Relic Knights. Iv got my Cerci Speed Circuit  from their kick starter just gathering dust.
Malifaux, would love to repaint my outcasts as they were again rushed for a tournament, also paint up my Seamus crew that only ever got sprayed black.

So hopefully when I am settled in my new house and I don't have as much time to procrastinate I will have more motivation to do some hobby (I realize this is very odd logic but iv got my fingers crossed it works out lol)

"Empire Standardbearer" by Marina 'Ringil' Aynagoz

                                                                   http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1217
Marina has painted an amazingly well done piece.  The nicks and scratches on the armor just serve to highlight how smooth and light the cloth looks.  The leather boots show a hardness of material in between that draws the eye to the gold accents.  Superb description of materials defines how well done this mini truly is.  The hair looks like hair, even if it is just a beard, and the paper is immensely crisp as is the freehand.  Marina has truly mastered technical painting and it is a joy to stare and drink in the details.  On a small mini such as this it is a fascinating study, but on a larger miniature, does it hold true?

"Obsidian Stonehorn" by  Sergey -We7- Chasnyk
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1164
Well in short yes.  The bone, obsidian and swamp basing are simply stellar.  The bone has an intensely intriguing striated look to it, and the fur looks wonderfully smooth.  The obsidian has a glassy reflection, and the swamp basing makes me smell the must and rot.  Technically this miniature is painted immensely well.  However, I personally am slightly unconvinced by the flesh on the rider.  It looks to me Sergey was more enamored with the stonehorn than the ogre, and I don't blame him.  Disagree?  Let me know in the comments. :) At the most this is an immensely nit-picky detail, but when the mini is painted this well, it begs for inspection.  Let's move on to the last fig.

"Dance Morko Dance!!" by Diego Esteban "dieguete"
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/1150
Oh I'm sorry, did I say that the previous models were convincing?  Let's be honest, the previous two pieces were amazing, and any hobbyist would love to be able to paint to that level or even simply own those miniatures.  However, Diego has blown them out of the water.  It's like walking in the Louvre and rounding the corner and catching sight of a Rembrandt.  Everything you have seen before is amazing, and wandering through those halls can numb your mind to the beauty, but catch sight of this and you are immediately speechless as you pore over ever inch of the piece.  The materials are impeccable, the conversion is seamless, the basing is simply superb, but the impression is just stunning.  This is a 3-D painting masterpiece.  I could break down every aspect that impresses me, but I implore you to simply click the link to see the pictures and make the discovery yourself.  I wouldn't want to deprive you of the surprise.

Taking Pictures of Your Models: A White Dwarf Guide

$

Hey Guys!

So I was flicking through a white dwarf and happened upon an article that I had ear marked to revisit one day to take better pictures of my models. Usually I take my pictures with a black cloth (#BlackClothWanker) or against my slate place mats and I think these come out ok. I take these under my ceiling mounted LED kitchen lights (which seem to give a really good light for painting and photography!) and for a quick 3am photo shoot I think it is not too bad. Last night however I decided to take a bit more time and try to improve the process (in between #TwitterGate banter) following the White dwarf guide.

I really should have take a few pictures of the set up to show how heath robinson and easy it was to set up but basically I used 8 sheets of A3 paper (layered to ensure the white was solid white), a stack of 10 books (horus heresy seemed to be fine!), an iPad (usually use my iPhone) and that was it. I decided to leave the lighting as it was as this seemed to be working fine. I really wish I had a better actual camera but this was the best I could do! I tucked the A3 paper onto maybe the 7th book in the stack to form a cascading “wave” flowing down from the paper to the table top and this formed the “infinity wall” effect of the white background.

Anyway the article is below for you to read (see drop box linky), please let me know what you think about the photos (not sure if I prefer my #BlackClothWanker approach?) and give it a go! Very easy to do!
