Yet another blogger/Rich's folly

For those I haven’t met my name is John and I’m a glutton for punishment.

As you know Rich likes to get other people to write his blog for him, so I’ve volunteered, unlike everyone else who he has asked. I’m a member of DWARF (Dunfermline Wargaming and Role-playing Fellowship) and have been playing toy soldiers seriously for about 6 years now. For most of that time I've been a Bretonnian player.

The latest addition to my Bretonnian army courtesy of Rich himself

The one thing I won't be talking about in my posts is painting.

I don't paint, cannot stand it, find it loathsome, would rather just stick the brushes up my nose pointy end first and self-administer a frontal lobotomy.

Over the last couple of years I have been actively organising (or assisting in the organisation of) Warhammer tournaments here in sunny Scotland, including the largest held north of the border – Winter War, DWARFs annual charity tournament. So I thought I would share a few thoughts on what I’ve learnt in that time.

Wargamers are a very accepting bunch on the whole. In the 5 years I’ve been attending and 2 years of organising events I have found that every person I’ve spoken to or had dealings with has been warm and accepting of those around them. This is an uncommon thing – compare the situation to say football. I’m an out man and after getting the initial “gay” conversation out of the way I’ve discovered that at heart not a single person cares about it in any way or form, however, not having fully painted and based models on the other hand is rightly punishable by death.

Wargamers hate change, that is until they absolutely love it and as far as I can tell this is not an analogue system. Love or hate. That’s it. 7th Edition changing to 8th was the death knell of WHFB………… I’m still waiting for the axe to fall,  and since it was published the number of tournaments and the attendance at them has risen here in Scotland . Everyone hates the End Times, until they realise they can have fun with it. Resin is awful, until they get something from Forgeworld… the list goes on.

This has taught me that above all else the community will always face a change like a bear with a sore head that’s had his hibernation interrupted. At first its unpleasant for all involved but eventually the sun will shine and honey will be found.

Me on most Mondays
The amount of fun had by a player is directly proportional to the amount of effort put in to making their opponent have fun. After a club event I organised last year I was sent feedback from a player that they had not enjoyed themselves during their games, when I asked for more details it became obvious that this person believed that fun = winning. Unfortunately his belief that using a netlist would guarantee that fun was flawed, somewhat unsurprisingly. The point is that as players we are all responsible for making sure that we enjoy ourselves by making sure that we all enjoy ourselves. Being a gracious winner or loser helps as does remembering that the dice will screw us all eventually.

From an organisational point-of-view I have grown to understand that most players are much happier with events that expect them to make an extra effort in some manner. I recently held an event which was unusual in its almost comp free nature, the army size being 3000pts and including the nasty-nasty that is End Times.

And here it is - Fall of the Old World, 300pts of stuff and nonsense!

What I discovered was within hours of announcing it people were embracing the ethos I had aimed for by looking to include the monster they wouldn’t normally use, or painting those extra Silverhelms/Dragons/Rhinox that they could never fit in to 2400pts. Other events do this as well, several include allowing players to bring extra themed characters or providing a comp that favours overlooked models and units.

Finally, soft-scores. Some hate them, some love them. You can include or exclude them from a tournament. Either way someone will complain, repeatedly, so decide what you want and move on to the awkward rules queries.

That’s enough from me for now, see you in the funny papers.

Painting Glowing Runes

Or at least, painting runes! I received the Circle of Orboros Celestial Fulcrum for my birthday earlier this year and I had some plans to turn it into a Hurricanum for my Empire army. One of the things that I noticed immediately was that there were an awful lot of runes on the piece that were going to need some attention.

My initial plan was to paint the whole thing green and then overbrush the grays on to it. I laid down a coat of green on the central section, but I quickly realised that there was no way to really highlight up the grey without wrecking the greens. I changed the plan and did all the gray first using the airbrush so that i could get a range of different grays ranging from lights to darks around the sphere. I could also dry brush the edges with the Daler Rowney Wash Brush (my new best friend) without worrying about the green getting ruined.

To do the runes I ended up using some Vallejo Fluorescent Green mixed with white which I watered down a lot (the green is very thick) to a consistency that would allow it to flow through the runes using capillary action. Then using a fine detail brush I was able to gently position the tip into the runes and let the green flow round the crack. Because the paint was so watery if I made any mistakes (and trust me, there were loads!) I could easily use a clean brush to mop up any that came out of the runes.Once these were done I was able to add some Green Glaze to the runes in places to increase the vibrancy. The Runes on the dark grey areas were much more effective too.

Here you can see how the runes looked when I got it right!

And here is the finished Hurricanum in all its glory ready to buff my Demis at next weekends South Coast Grand Tournament!

Oh, and if you look closely you can check out the in built wound marker. That'll be another blog post I guess!

Steve's SCGT Empire list

With the South Coast Grand Tournament only a week away now I thought I'd have a look at my list and put down some thoughts on how I think it will go. The comp is the unique SCGT comp that Russ and Dan have devised and it's based around power and soft choices. You can have no more than five power choices and your comp score is worked out at a number between 0 and 10. There are the usual mix of objectives and secret missions and the games are win loss draw. If you want a closer look at the comp in detail you can find it on The Warhammmer Forum

I'm taking the empire with a comp score of two.

First of all it's important to note that this is not the list I wanted to take. I wanted some skirmishing archers and crossbow men in the list, but painting time was against me. In the end the only new models that I have added are a new Hurricanum and three more demigryph Knights. I have also played around with the unit of spearmen and added in a couple of guys as I only had 28 painted. The list is similar to what I took to the Mersey Meltdown where I had some problems, and I suspect I will have similar issues in Portsmouth. Saying that I did go 3-2 at the meltdown and was on table 3 for game 3, so the list isn,t terrible.

I am running the double level 4 (light and heavens) which are traditionally strong laws for the empire. Lots of cheap buff spells plus magic missiles and comet to hit things that want to stay in a corner are all good. There are also very few spells which are situational.

One of the issues is having these guys on foot in the state troop block with the general and the bsb makes for a very tempting target. The bsb has the scarecrow banner to stop the unit getting terror bombed early by scary fliers, but generally these guys advance slowly behind the Demi's to buff and shoot magic.

The rest of the core is made up of 2 units of Knights. These both have banners for fortitude but do need to be used as throwaway units sometimes too. This is one of the problems! Against a brettonian player at Mersey he pushed three units of peg Knights at me with the lances 12" behind and ran over me.

The canon is there to do what it does. You hear all these bros saying cannons never do what you want. I say rubbish! Cannons are great! That's why I also have the SteamTank. I generally keep this back to protect the block with the random move. And did I mention it has another cannon?!

The rest of the army is made up of 2 units of demigryph Knights. These boys will be doing the fighting! They should be backed up by the Hurricanum which is a great synergy piece, giving the Demi's plus one to hit and improving the magic phase.

That's pretty much the plan. It's not new or particularly innovative, but it does work well in some games, and hopefully I'll do ok. There are problems. Good players are an issue! The list only goes so far, and the games I have lost recently have been to Luke Morton, Ben Curry, Andy Potter, and Jake Corteen. All very strong players with lists equal to or better than my own. I also struggled against by direct lists. Warriors and brettonians can be issues, and if there is a lot of undeath running about that could be a problem as I only have magic missiles to deal with ethereals.

Still, I am looking forward to the event and hopefully I'll play well enough to sneak two or three wins...

Yet another hops on to the PaintHammer bandwagon!

Hello I've Trev and I'm yet another victim of Rich's people grab. We have all been coerced into writing this blog since he obviously can't be bothered any more...

I've been wargaming for about 20 years now and got into it through that wonderful if incredibly frustrating game Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat on PS1.

That was followed up with a painting set bought for my birthday by my Mum who obviously went into Games Workshop looking for the games follow up Dark Omen but came out with a starter set of paints and a box of Saurus. Lets just say my initial attempts at painting have definitely been bettered over time but I still have the first ever model lurking about my parents loft.

I've painted a few Warhammer armies in that time including HE (twice), O&G, Lizardmen and Warriors which I've added a few choice pictures of below. Despite having painted armies these armies I'm not a huge fan of it, since I get really bored painting very similar models over and over again. That said I do like to having most of the options for all the ones I have so never seem to stop!

Hobby goals for the next while is to paint more single models as and when I fancy it to improve my painting if nothing else. I've won a single painting award (in dubious circumstances) and had a couple of nominations but want to try new styles. My current style is very much down to my love of Foundry paints and have ended up moving towards a slightly cartoony 3 colour style which their paint sets really favour. This has recently been encouraged by reading the quite wonderful Figure Painter Magazine

Some of my better army work has barely ever seen the table, like the Malifaux and Hordes Trollbloods painted about the turn of 8th edition Warhammer (which I really fancy painting more of and depending on the state of 9th ed may happen again!). Also see examples of using purple heather before Rich and glowing runes before Steve. I'm also the laziest photographer in the world, expect to see more of the painted thumb and poor lighting.

I don't just paint. I dip in and out of gaming, sometimes I love Warhammer and other times it drives me batty. Despite that I'll end up attending about 5/6 tournaments a year which are mostly Scotland based nowadays and have been to 5 ETC's with Scotland. I'm in a gaming is good phase so expect the next blog post you see from me to be a short tourney report from Storm over Stirling held on the 18th and 19th of April. Don't expect immense tactical wisdom since despite the ETC attendances and the long time playing I've never won anything. I'll also likely be taking a Star Dragon High Elf list to the next one (because Dragons) so fully expecting to be cannoned off at every opportunity.

Finally I'm not against shameless self promotion and will be helping to run the Caledonian Carnage on the 23rd and 24th May. This can be found like every other tournament worth going to on TWF. Linky here :) Grab a pal and come along.

Cheers

Scale75 Smog Riders

Apologies for any mis-formatting or typing in the post. I'm writing from my phone, at my mother in laws.

Recently I was reading figure painter magazine (which will be a topic of another post eventually) and saw some models I had to have; the scale75Smog Riders

The aim of these is to help improve your painting, and for me they seem to have worked.

The packaging is absolutely gorgeous. Each model comes with a small set of instructions, nicely printed, and more instructions available on the Smog Riders website.

The instructions are OK, but do lack some detail. It covers the colors to use (scale75 ones that you can optionally buy as a kit with the models) which are easy enough to match to other brands. There are only 3 stages for each part explained, which isn't enough for some things, and not everything is explained properly. I'm unsure as to how they painted the eyepatch on Colonel Clayton, for example. Overall though, they're useful to make and it's not hard to pick apart the process used for some bits.

The models them selves are lovely though. Well worth the money. I got mine from Model Display Products (I think). They weren't on the site but a quick email have some winging my way.

Overall, I love them. I'll post finished shots when I'm done.

9th Edition is (supposedly) coming

8th rulebook, not that it ever says that's what it's called

And for an old fart like me what better than to look back at what has gone before rather than panicking about what is about to come.  I’m really thinking just 8th ed when I start writing this but it’s worth remembering I started Warhammer back at 3rd Ed so have a long familiarity with edition changes and all that jazz.

So 8th edition dropped on 10 July 2010, on that basis will be closing on 5 years old assuming 9th comes out this year as forecast.  Looking back over the editions this is broadly in line with the frequency of updates, 6th was the longest with 6 years but I’d say that was largely due to them hitting the reset button on army books that edition so everything was being reworked.

At Release
So how was the transition to 8th received?  Well there was much gnashing of teeth and wailing from certain aspects of the community, plenty of people claiming it was too random to be competitive, Yahtzee being a frequently used moniker and that premeasuring took the skill out the game. Other parts of the community hailed it as the best thing to ever happen to the game pointing to the fact that it finally made infantry viable choices for armies and helped balance the game.  There were many other significant changes too, I’d say it was the biggest step change through the editions of any, though you could argue 5th to 6th and the total overhaul of armies & the magic system from cards to dice was greater but I’d not put that solely down to the rules though.

Personally I was still playing dwarfs at the time and the change from max 6” charge including the distance for the wheel to 15” max measure to closest point was amazing!  Suddenly I was taking part in a large chunk of the game which had basically not been an option in the past.  As a dwarf player I could guess warmachine accurate to ½” going most of the way across the table so being able to just pick a point didn’t really change much. I never considered the ability to guess ranges a gaming skill so it was nice that what was considered tactical/strategic skill was actually more important than micromanagement and being able to eyeball distances.
At the end of 7th all the armies were 2x10 horrors 3x5-6 fleshhounds, 2x single fiends, billy the bloodthirster and the Masque of slannesh (or variants upon that theme) or shooty DE with a pendant of khaleth dreadlord on a dragon.  The fact that the ‘tactical’ skill in most of these armies was having a longer charge range than most people and being able to spot that 2” gap where you could charge and your opponent couldn’t never really struck me as particularly skilful so I wasn’t overly disappointed to see it go. So yes I was a fan of the new edition from the get go.
Now have a look at what armies appeared.  You had some early tournament wins by Vampires with the graveguard horde (hitting on 2’s), Daemons with 2 big hordes later becoming up to 3 hordes of bloodletters as standard netlists.  Combat infantry DE with mindrazor with hordes of corsairs became common.  Infantry was king.
Cavalry were written off as worthless as they couldn’t break steadfast and would just get ground out.  Combat characters were deemed too vulnerable to the attacks coming back (ohh that was another big one, 7th ed models killed didn’t get to strike back, so you wiped front ranks out and were safe from any return damage) and mages became the character of preference, the new ‘super spells’ were identified as ‘autowin buttons as you could delete half a horde of infantry and the characters hiding in there by just spamming 6 dice.
A rather hideous proxy army, it's meant to be ogres.

Early Books (up to Ogres)
That ran along for a while and after 6m people were complaining of the game being stagnant as we’d had no new books then O&G came out, everyone complained about only 8 magic items in the book, TK dropped and the same, plus their unique magic lore got nerfed but T8 beasties were supposedly going to break the game (guess what, they didn’t and are now considered junk). Then we got Ogres.
Ogres changed the environment.  They went from being a pitiful weak army filled with pointless limitations on their build to a powerhouse and that powerhouse had a name… It was mournfang.  All of a sudden there was a unit with so much damage output it could blow it’s way through the infantry hordes steadfast in a round or two tops, they didn’t even require the charge to be effective.  Plus with a 2+ save and parry were survivable (unlike the TK necropolis knights, which lacked the save or the manoeuvrability to dominate the game).  Monstrous Cavalry just became the game changer.
VC came out and were as ever comped to death over ethereals and screams but didn’t overly change much then Empire followed and added to the MC trend which basically sealed the fate of infanty armies.  Now you needed to be either manoeuvrable to avoid the MC or survivable enough to take a charge from them and not get broken, which really meant a 1+ AS and not getting stomped, so suddenly cavalry units started to have a purpose, but they also needed damage output to beat the MC so combat characters started to feed back into the game.  And we got 10 months without a book at this point so the ‘meta’ settled down.  Largely I think this is the period on which most people base their views of 8th being a reasonably balanced game.
The Rise of Chaos
Skullcrushers - they crushed peoples fun
After that we got warriors and daemons in quick succession early 2013 and skullcrushers were a big thing.  The daemons book release was hilarious, people declared it nerfed to the point of being one of the bottom tier armies (I actually bought them at this point buying from ragequitters thinking I was getting a middlish army) wow did that reaction get proven wrong.  It wasn’t really until the ETC that the UK cottoned on but the wall of Nurgle style army became very popular and very common.  It was one of the few counters to the super-fast & hard hitting WoC armies as they tended to win the grind.  Suddenly the power of the O&G book becomes an all-time high due to their abilty to ignore armour and just delete WoC and ogres with relative ease but they don’t fare terribly well against daemons putting a balancing check in place.

The year of the Elf
Elves, pointy shoes & hats, hated by everyone.

Then came the time of the Elves HE in May 2013, DE in Oct 2013 and basically it turned everything around again. Bolt throwers & mobility meant the smashy WoC were no longer dominant, Monst Cav were relatively easy picking too.  By now it’s worth noting the “powerhouse” book of ogres have been well and truly put in their place as each of these books basically trumped them.  Power creep? I’d guess you say yes but at the same time there is a bit more of a rock, paper, scissors scenario at play.  You can design a list which will comfortably beat an all comer list for one of these armies but that will conversely be hugely weak against another.
Dwarfs and WE rounded out the releases under 8th, neither hugely changed the status of affairs though both add to the Rock/paper/scissors matchup consideration for list design. With that we come to where we are now (ignoring ET as a entirely different topic), I suppose the one thing to mention is the FAQ which bumped the character allowance to 50% of your army in each of lords & heroes being the next big meta shift but it’s not a huge issue where ET characters are banned as comp generally hits the 4-5 armies that get the biggest bonus from it.
The End (of) Times (bro)

Game over man, game over.

The ET stuff has been a bit of silly fun in many peoples’ opinion bringing us all to the brink of a new edition ready to reset everything to a fresh start.  And you know what, I’m still really enjoying playing 8th ed, so through all of this they’ve not lost me, the game has kept fun and fresh challenges over the course of 5 years.  I’ve heard a few people bemoaning the staleness of the game (I was pretty much there just before ET released and it gave me a new lease of life) but when I look back at 7th I know I was sick of it for a good 18m before it went and that simply hasn’t been the case for me in 8th.  Do I like the super characters, no not really, they completely change the nature of the game.  But all the other stuff is generally quite cool as long as not taken to silly extremes, restrictions (or self-restraint) make it fun.
Overall Thoughts on 8th
Warhammer 9th, please select a new world.
So there we have it, armies went from all infantry hordes, though monstrous cavalry round to cavalry buses and now often into character hammer through the cycle of the edition.  I’ve even noticed a few hordes coming back into the game recently.  It does make me wonder are the much maligned GW design team really as bad at what they do as we think?  They’ve incentivised gamers at different points in the cycle of 8th ed to buy pretty much every unit type from every book in the game and not done it in a way what has had people calling them out for forcing them to buy new things, to me it feels like they deserve a round of applause for a job well done.
In conclusion I say bravo GW, WFB has been a wonderful ride through 8th and whoever has been the hand at the tiller over that time (the much maligned Matt Ward is certainly responsible for elves onwards from what I understand) have given me a great deal of pleasure from playing their game.  Now for 9th I have only one wish, please make it as fun a journey as 8th was.

Obligatory army shot... ohh shiny

I painted up most of this Bret army over 12 months ago but I never got round to basing it up. So over the last couple of months I decided I needed to put the effort in to get it all ready for the tabletop.  In part this was spurred on by the rumours of them being removed from the game for the next edition, so figured I should get them played before they disappeared.  Just to be clear it didn't take a couple of months work to base it up, I was just doing odds and sods around painting other things.
Fireforge Knights

The main feature of this army is that the figures are pretty much all non-GW models.  The only exception being one box of knights which I use for my characters and the peasant archers.  The bulk of the knights are from Fireforge Miniatures.  They are a bargain at £20 for 12 knights and they also do a mounted yeomen equivalent which I also used.
like these, you can't have them. (oop ex-ilis)

The peg knights were actually the first models I bought for the army, they are by Ex-Ilis but unfortunately I only ever bought 6 of the models and the manufacturer then went out of business and they’re basically impossible to get these days.  So to supplement them I picked up a few of the Mantic Elohi models which aren’t quite as nice sculpts but more or less fit the theme.  The one thing with them is they have tiny heads so I replaced them with GW knight heads I had left over from the one box I’d bought.
The trebs are also Ex-Ilis as it was 2 for 7 on a discount site selling off the last of their stock.
Token GW models and some Gamezone knights
Finally the Grail Knights are from the Gamezone feudal knights range.  They are beautiful figures but an absolute pig to assemble and it’s a struggle to rank them up because they are so huge.
The other thing I was looking to achieve with this army was a quite striking colour scheme but also one which was pretty easy to paint (it’s another reason I went for the Fireforge Knights as the horses cloaks are less ornate).  The thinking on this went all the way back to assembly, so you’ll notice that virtually all the knights have full helmets so no flesh is visible.
I also have fronts angle shots!

So speed of painting in mind the whole lot got airbrushed white then yellow to give a really bright yellow base colour with minimal effort, that then gets a wash of cassendora yellow (actually an orange wash).  I then put down the basecoats on the horses & blue by brush.  The metals are my standard cheaty approach of flat silver then a drakenhoff nightshade wash.  That is about it as far as painting the models is concerned.
Peasants - dirty scum.
One thing I did try to do was make the peasants not look quite as glorious and shiny as the actual knights, presumably they don't get their clothes washed as often.  So the yellows on these guys were done with a much darker yellow base colour and the blue got a wash over the top to darken it down.

The basing on the army is a lot more effort though!  Pollyfilla goes down on the base to level out and give some texture, a few stones and some cork into that to give rocks, then once dry sand over the top of the filler.  That is all then painted Rhinox brown, then drybrushed layers of: doombull brown, mounfang brown, karak stone:mournfang mix, karak stone.  The rocks are panzer grey, tank blue grey, frostbite all shoved on in random mixes to get a transition of blue/greys.  Then GW snow mixed with PVA and Mininatur tufts to finish it off.

Obligatory overhead view which doesn't really show anything

So there it is a classic (he says himself) example of how to crank out an army with not too much effort that looks pretty decent (again so I say myself) on the tabletop.  Will it win awards, I very much doubt it!  Will it score max paint points under most systems, yup.

3 colours minimum - tick
Basecoat, shading/highlights, based & trays - tick
cohesive - tick

As ever this army would be easy to go back to and add a bunch more detail should I desire it to look even better, I'd say this is the case with virtually all my armies, they are a solid tabletop level that could easily be improved on but I seldom do.  Anyone out there claiming to be unable to turn out a warhammer army to an acceptable standard I would point to the approach/techniques I've used and say there is nothing technically difficult about them (the airbrush steps could be replaced by spray cans as it's just flat coats on everything).

My key tips:
1. Pick a simple but striking paint scheme.  These models have 5 colours on them.  Yellow, blue, metallic and brown (there are 2 browns, horse & wood). Which then have 3 washes on them - cassandora on the yellow, drakenhoff on the blue and agrax on the horses.  But it has a load of contrast in those colours that make it jump out.
2. Think about what is visually important, in this army there are no silly pouches and the likes but the detail that does exist is just painted in one fabric colour and that's it.  Nobody will see it or even notice if they're looking from more than a few inches away so why bother.
3. Consistent basing and a little more effort here covers a multitude of sins.  I admit it above, I put more colours and effort into the bases than any part of the models and it helps make the army look way better than it really is!
4. Batch paint - I did the knights in batches of 10ish, so all yellow, then all blue, then all armour over 10 models, it's not great fun but it gets you an army done.  And break it up if you're getting bored, sick of painting knights, go do some peasants on foot, or a warmachine or in my case some peg knights as they're totally different.

Tadaa! The nightlords are finally done. Sevetar was the final model for me to paint, and my first attempt at powders. I really like forgeworld models. They may be pricey but they are absolutely lovely to paint! Sadly though, I think this will be all of the heresy miniatures I'll be painting for a while. I'll be selling them in the near future (hit me up if interested).

In the same vein of Dave's Brettonia post, I thought for my first post I would show off my Lizardmen army. A few reasons for this,

1. I'm rather proud of them
2. When 9th hits I'm not sure how or if they will be usable
3. I am awful using them so probably won't take them to many tournaments even if they are usable in 9th.

So this army has taken about 2 years to get to this size, with much hobby wobbling in those 2 years, speed painted a demon army for example (awful with that too) I started it after having my skaven zulu dawned by Rafael Harbinson and I thought I want to do that too other people lol.

I chose the colour scheme by basically copying an army i found on an old post on TWF which was copied from fellow dragon slayer Timmy Fisher which has given rise to the joke that this is his army not mine lol.

So on to the models.

It's ok, they're not a real army!

So the observant among you will have noticed a few hopefully interesting details

Thats right, no Heroic Killing Blow for me, not a HoirsiHoirsi in sight. Just a few wicked stunties and all the artillery I could lay my hands on.

I decided to go for something different from my normal Bretonnians for 5 reasons:

1) I like to try new things
2) I could easily borrow the army from the Space Pirate
3) I like artillery
4) I really really like Artillery
5) They have an actual steam engine in the army... A STEAM ENGINE!!!!!

Am I confident I will do well?
Yes

Is this confidence completely unfounded?
Totally

Will I make noises like this fella when I move the Iron Deamon?

DAMF F-KING RIGHT I WILL!!!
Not to be too serious I have been trying to work out how best to play to my, and the armies strengths. I think the list I have come up with does that well. A few, strong characters and a power unit to build the army round. My main concern is that I will struggle with some of the scenarios in the pack and fortitude of 5 isn't the greatest (especially as 4 is in one unit)

Game 1 is a grudge against Greig Summers of the Fizzy Drink Gamers club and I'm pretty certain he'll be bringing the pain in the form of a Legions of Chaos list.

Deamon Princes love artillery, right?

See you in the funny pages!

South Coast GT 2015 Review: Games 1 and 2

Well, the South Coast GT is over for another year (and possibly the last hurrah for 8th Edition too...), and as ever it was an absolute blast. It was my third time in Horndean, and probably the best one yet. I took the Empire (you can see what I thought about the list here) with a few new additions, packed up all the terrain and got ready to head off on the four hour drive down to the south coast.

The Hall ready for action
After a somewhat disjointed journey I eventually rolled into the college a bit after six. The venue was already fairly well populated with wargamers playing pick up games and board games, and I bumped into a host of familiar faces. Chief among these was my good friend Andy who moved down south from Sheffield last September and was rooming with me for the weekend. He was rocking out a Warriors army and we had decided a practise game was in order. We played some Battle for the Pass (chosen by me!) and the game was pretty interesting. Andy pretty much battered me, but at the end I had got my mission, broken his fortitude and retained mine, which meant I actually ended up winning 12-8 under the system. This got me thinking a bit about how the games could go and the importance of selecting the right mission. One of the issues I realised here was that not knowing my opponents mission could be a problem. This turned out to be quite prophetic over the weekend.

After a relatively early night I arrived early Saturday morning knowing that I was playing fellow Gooner Rich Cierezko (sp.?) with his Double Chimera, Slaaneshi Demon Prince list. Having some experience playing warriors myself I knew that the Chimeras can be problematic if not dealt with quickly, and the Acquiescence/Cac combo is not good on high armour, low model count units (all of mine!). However I also knew that I had cannons!

Rich won the deployment roll off and selected Battleline. However, despite my higher comp score (two to his three) I sneaked the chance to go first. A combination of first turn magic and cannons saw off both chimeras, much to Rich's fury! Things got worse when he pushed the prince to within 12" of the Demi's and then double 1'd his first spell. The prince promptly got rolled by the Demis turn 2, giving me a healthy points boost and completing my Slay the General (Mission #1) objective. After that the game turned into me pressing and Rich trying to conserve points whilst hurling abuse at me and my impressive cannon skills!

Chimeras vs Cannons - Cannons win!
I failed to get all of the Warriors fortitude however, but was still more than happy to walk away with a 16-4 victory.

For lunch I had a salad before checking the Warscore update on my iPhone to see who I was playing game two. Turned out I had a chap called George Hollingdale with Lizard men. The army was a Loremaster Slann, Tetto, 2 big blocks (Temple Guard and Saurus) and a combination of skink cohorts and skirmishers. I deployed in less of a corner than in game 1 and prepared to go Lizard herding. One of the problems I faced in this game was a large, cunningly placed marsh in the middle of the board that I was going to have to negotiate if i wanted to get into the meat of the army. It always seems to take time to get into lizards, but I tried a sneaky turn 1 Net of Amyntok on some skinks that were in easy charge range for the demis which would have put a five pack in the middle of his army turn 2, but the little buggers passed their strength test so were able to leg it! Damn!

The game progressed well. I cleaned up Tetto, a Scar Vet (who failed a short charge leaving him in cannon range) and most of the Skinks without losing a great deal before getting into the Templeguard and the Saurus with the Demi Gryphs. With the Hurricanum backing up both units I thought I was going to get a big win until the Demis fighting the Saurus decided not to restrain, and instead ran into a wood near the board edge, lost a wound or two to terrain tests and promptly paniced themselves off the board. This allowed George to pick up a healthy 600 points as the temple guard eventually beat up the Demi's they were fighting making the overall score a lot closer than I thought it might be.
Probably Turn 4 and top right are the Demis that didn't fancy tangling with Temple Guard. Also check out the blighted Marsh!
I'd decided that as it was Game 2 then Mission #2 (Capture the Flag!) was the order of the day. I managed this by a score of three to two, but with the demis fleeing the field of battle I was unable to clean up the Temple Guard so failed to get on a hill and deny George his mission and he also wasn't broken. However this still meant I had sneaked a 12-8 win.

Ian said that no one ever casts large comet, and then promptly cast it! Ended up being St12! Luckily the demis above had buggered off by then!

Things started to get a little comical around Game 3. I was drawn against Ian Sturgess (he of the 'this list is dreadful, I don't know what i'm doing' mantra) and his High Elves. He had four (or possibly five) nobles and princes all flying around on Eagles, and despite his protestations knew exactly what they did. I picked my mission with the usual tactical brilliance (Game 3, therefore Mission #3 - Surgical Strike), set everything up in the corner and started to try and get Ian drunk so he would play poorly. I set up in a corner, drank Jaeger and cider (not together), cannoned off most of his flying guys and fought the frostie to death with the demis. Ian played a lot better than me, we both got our missions, neither of lost our fortitude and I beat him by about 400 or so points to win my third game of the day, again with a 12-8 scoreline.

The rest of the evening was somewhat blurry, and apparently people were amused (and hopefully not offended) by my drunkeness. I know there was a fairly long and drunk conversation with Byron and Les from Facehammer about painting and whether or not my Arachnorok was dusty, and at one point I was definitely trying to get Neil Peckett to have a push ups and squats competition with me (he declined). All in all, it was a pretty good Saturday evening!

Sunday morning I woke up and filled myself with Nurofen, fruit and tea, and got to the venue feeling surprisingly chipper, much to the chagrin of the wargamers that had seen me falling about the night before. I rocked up to find myself playing Dan Wells, who had fully embraced the spirit of the event by taking two ghoul kings on Terrorgeists and then too normal Terrorgeists. I'm pretty sure he was unimpressed, but not surprised, when I chose Battle for the Pass and set up on the baseline!
This was taken just after the cannon had gone to work on one Terrorgeist. Only three to go....Urrrrgh!

The game actually was quite exciting. I got rid of two Terrorgeists through shooting and magic (including the general), and the Demis killed a third, but Dan played well and got two Banshees into the steam tank and used the third Demi to scream off the cannon. On turn six we both had two scoring units by one building, and I had five demis by the second building that had to pass a ld7 panic test after getting screamed by the remaing Terrorgeist. Luckily, with help from the gleaming pennant I held, giving me the #4 Secret Mission (Buildings), along with a 16-4 win as I failed to break Dan's fortitude.
You don't see this deployment every day, right?

So, four wins out of four. Could the impossible really happen...?

Empire Painting Plan - OMG SO MUCH TO DO!

So things are starting to get a little crazy and I need to get caught up with my painting. Im attending the Caledonia Carnage Team Doubles tournament (hosted by Trev and Ryan at Common Ground Games) with Mike as bestest dice buddy and can’t wait. Unfortunately I need to paint 1200pts of Empire in just over a month (well 3 demis and stank are done lol) so with this in mind I thought I would set out a plan to get this painted.

In case you haven’t noticed im a big fan of plans (#OCD) as it helps keep my tiny, scatter brained mind in some semblance of order. Personally I use google calendar to layout a plan and set deadlines (use Microsoft calendar for work and my OCD doesn’t like mixing lol). I find this really helps me as I can see where I am against plan and if I need to put in extra hours to meet the deadline. I’m a big believer in front loading projects and breaking the back of it early so I don’t need to stress later on.

So here are my 1 month (ish) plan

17th April: Spray paint based army and applied PVA sealant paint mix. (WIP shots below)
18th April: Assemble Halberds and Knights
19th April: Finish 2 Wizards
26th April: Finish 3 Demigryphs
4th  May: Finish 4 Knights
11th May: Finish 4 Knights
18th May: Finish 2 Knight and a Witch Hunter
20th May: Spray Movement Trays
23rd -24th May:  CALEY Carnage!

After this I need to get another 6 Demis, 50 Halberds, 20 Archers, a cannon and 23 Spearman painted for August ish which might be a tall ask with my wedding coming up! Also want to do a few wee 40k models (in particular my inquisitor scale space marine). Going back and forth on my Grey Knight colour scheme and I am kinda thinking I might paint them as 1stcompany Ultramarines so I can dual use them to get more variety out of the army. Saw some amazing dark blue and NMM gold marines on twitter (pics below) which I want to emulate. After painting the Demis with the NMM blue I really think I could pull off a very cool GK/SM army….

I guess like everyone I have been a bit in limbo over 9thand as such I haven’t felt the drive to paint up a 2400pt army to my highest possible standard. That said painting has always been my primary driver and I painted for 2 years before I even played actual people lol! Anyway hopefully will have some finished pictures of my wizards this weekend, have been pondering up some fluff for them as a brother and sister story! Oh and I need to finally write up my arena of death ruleset for 5 man 1000pts character warhammer games!

Over the weekend I got quite a bit of hobby done, assembling 20 archers and 50 halberds for my empire army and finishing off two wizards. I tried something a little different with them with a fantasy fire red hair colour. Fluff wise I will be using these as brother and sister, two halves of the same coin one light one heavens wizard. Been playing a lot with lvl4 heavens and lvl 4 light, love the combo! Anyway let me know what you think of the models, was good fun painting some small character models for a change!

South Coast GT 2015 Review: Games 5 and 6

So, could the dream continue? With only two games remaining it was still unlikely! Game 5 I had moved to the heady heights of table 13, which at any other event would be somewhat irrelevant, but at the South Coast with 200 players this was pretty shocking! I was up against John Lammin, a new face to me, but clearly someone not to be underestimated if he was doing this well. And then I saw why...Dark Elves!
A picture of John's Army! Dark Elves

Actually, the list was pretty balanced compared to the stuff I have played in recent events and warm up games, and once again I managed to  sneak the roll off for deployment which meant only one thing... Battle for the Pass of course! Having played this scenario against Andy Potter (former UK master) recently I knew the worse thing I could do was let the Dark Riders and Warlocks get round the side, so I set up as best I could to prevent this.

In the end this game came down to one thing - Speed of Light Demigryphs (10 of them), fighting a horde of Witch Elves. When the dust settled John had lost the cauldron, and when he removed it and ranked up his guys he was not steadfast by a single model, putting him on double ones which he failed, and the demis ran him down, taking out his general, BSB and all his combat threat.
Me set up in the usual deployment for the weekend!

There was still a level 4 Death sorceress zooming about on ponies with warlocks, so I had to eat some purple suns and double flee the Spearmen at one point on turn five, but they rallied and I managed to claim my table quarters too allowing me to sneak yet another mission (five from five!) and gain another 16-4 win! At this point people were literally in shock!

So, game 6. Here the dream ended in spectacular fashion! Its fair to say that I am not overly impressed with myself here for a number of reasons which I will get into. I ended up playing Neil Peckett, someone I know well and would consider a good friend on the tournament scene. Instead of this being the fun game it should have been I pretty much ruined it by making all the mistakes I hadn't made previously and getting utterly frustrated with myself to the point where Neil asked if I needed to take a few minutes away.
Do do do! Come on and do the Conga!

Rather than recapping the game (I got smashed 20-0) I'll try and talk about the mistakes I made. Really there are three:

  • Mistake 1 - Know your Enemy. I have an inbuilt negative opinion of the Skaven army, the book, and the rules for the majority of the units. I always feel like its an unfair game and this is based solely on my experience of playing Rob Hallam and his Abomb. Units being able to charge when they appear out of the ground, for example, is something that I thought had been eradicated (you only have to read the 'Entombed beneath the Sands' rule), yet Skaven can do it, and with St7 combat monster Stormfiends no less! However more importantly they can do it with Night Runners. So the first reason I got frustrated was my lack of knowledge
  • Mistake 2 - Not paying Attention. I was already frustrated that the Night Runners had been able to charge my Cannon (in a 20 man conga line) so rather than pay attention to what was actually happening I tried to counter charge with everything tha could fight them. The Night runners that had spectacularly failed to kill a cannon crew then promptly killed both my level 4 wizards and the BSB when I flanked them with the spearmen. This got me in the 'yeah whatever' mode that Dan Heelan spoke about on the latest HeelanHammer podcast.
  • Mistake 3 - Don't be a Dick! All of this lead me to be a really off with Neil through no fault of his own. I let my mistakes ruin what should have been a good game. Its important to realise that I had killed a Verminlord and the Stormfiends, so before charging the Night Runners I was in no way out of the game. Facing an uphill battle? Definitely, but I wasn't out of it. But my own poor attitude and resulting moodiness was uncalled for and the game was basically over at this point (turn 3).

In the end I gave Neil my Best Sports vote as he didn't make a big thing out of it and offered some good advice at the end. Hopefully we'll play again and I will actually give him a fun and entertaining game.

So Gamingwise I finished in 42nd place, not my best showing at this event in terms of finish, but I think I proved to myself that I can play well when I put my mind to it, and after Game 5 there were very few players on 5 wins from 5 I think.

I'll do an event recap and talk about the painting later... :)

Motivation - Nervous for 9th

Destination - motivation, route calculating...
Directly stolen from the latest episode of Heelanhammer (if you've not listened then do, it's a nice posititve look forward to 9th rather than the usual doom and despair) comes the topic of what impact is 9th having upon us hobby gamers.

New projects to work on?

Well the easy answer is the other games I play. So Malifaux, Relic Knights, Epic, 40k are all sat in boxes in various states of completion, plenty to be getting on with there but mood & motivation is always a tricky thing and I'm not pointing that direction right now.

I haz all the games
So if I stuck with WFB what tempts me? First off coming out of SCGT I'm happy with my Bretonnians but I made sure I had a chat with Russ on what would take my army up to that 'best painted' standard.  So have a desire to do that as I'd like to get a few nominations even if I don't expect to win. The one issue is that Brets are apparently in line for getting squatted so that slightly puts me off.

You too can say pew pew while playing WFB
I've got Empire part painted that I could get to a complete army but  not really jazzed for the army, regular humans don't really do much for me in a fantasy game so I've always struggled to get going with them. I realise I say this directly after having done a Bret army but they're Arthurian legend not regular human and my brain is happy with that distinction.

Hats - go big, or go home
I've also got DE, CD and a bunch of WOC stuff sat in boxes that I could be working on but the DE fall into the 'why bother' until I know if the elf legion is the only way forward or if standalone DE is worth considering.  CD is one I really want to do, it's the old big hat models and I think they're lovely, somewhat of an age, but with a more current paintjob still look great. WoC is where I should focus as the army is part done and really just needs a few options to get it rounded out to a proper army but they're something I've struggled to pick up and get going with for a while now.

Warriors of Chaos - They do the mash, they do the monster mash

No new Projects?

This was where the HH guys were pointing people towards.  New edition, all change, why would you start something new when it might just be invalidated in a few weeks/months. Obviously what I've talked about above were predominantly new projects, I'd done 1-2 models/units for each of those but that was the extent of it.  Obviously playing it safe you don't touch anything new and you'll avoid wasting effort as typically at some point you'll find a use for most models in an army book (see my prior ramble on the lifecycle of 8th ed).
Totally relevant quote - I bet she never said it
Unlike most people, and probably because I'm a bit deranged, sticking to existing projects opens up a lot of armies for me.

  • Dwarfs - Never updated for the 8th ed book so some more gyros and Irondrakes wouldn't go amiss.
  • Daemons - nowt else I want to add really, maybe a block of fiends as I've got them in a box somewhere.
  • High Elves - No real desire to add much, have all the dragons and Frosties I need, anything else would just be boring elves. (I guess a Flamespyre would be the one option.)
  • Lizardmen - Again a rather unloved 7th ed book army I've never gone back to, never did temple guard so they would be the obvious win.
  • O&G - An army I always keep meaning to go back to, but never seem to find the time.  First addition would be a unit of 3 gobo chariots I've had waiting for years!
  • Skaven - Again, not touched in years, 2nd cannon, 2nd wheel, stormfiends would all be sensible.  I've never done a bell either.  But oddly the unit I most want to add are night runners with their tunneller weapons team, only know 1 player who runs it and it regularly wins him games.
  • Tomb Kings - I have everything in the book apart from stalkers and the new morghasts, be rude not to add them! Also TK being a dead (da dum cha) army means the option to take up any VC units for a UL force means plenty I could do here.
  • Wood Elves - Again a fairly complete army but I've never painted any of the combat infantry, apart from wardancers, so plenty of holes to fill there.

Steve Jobs - Self justification is awesome
The other thing I could do, and I touched on it with my Brets earlier, is to improve the paint quality of one of my armies to try and chase painting awards.  Of them all my WE are probably my best, with O&G next.  Though technically the dwarfs are better painted they lack any real wow factor and the basing is a disappointment, hmm if 9th ed changes basing I guess that gives me something to do.

Of everything above the majority of the armies will exist in some form going forward, under legions books if nothing else, but the demotivation on my elves is the different basing on HE and WE making them not interchangeable.  I am ahead of the game in that I based my Skaven, DoC and WoC on the same basing before ET was even mentioned, so a spot of luck there!

Post-its - telling me what to do since forever
End of the day I'll probably continue to do what I've always done and just paint what I feel like, I've got loads of models in a cupboard crying out to be painted so it's not as if it will influence my purchasing (which I've basically tried to have on hold this year anyway).

Conclusion

In summary impending 9th ed chat has not impacted what I'm doing very much.  I'll hold off on the Empire and updating the paint scheme on my Brets in case they become one big army, but otherwise can happily push on with all the millions of paint projects I've had on the go for years anyway.

I've had most of the month of April not painting largely due to other commitments so I think I'm going to start back with some big hat Chaos Dwarfs just because and then see where motivation takes me.  Hopefully everyone else has been able to keep churning out stuff despite the instability 9th has introduced, would love to hear any other peoples approaches to working round the 'worry' of the edition change.

9th Edition: Round Base Gameplay Speculation

$

0

So with all the rumours and podcasts talking about 9thedition I thought I would chuck in my two cents on some blue sky thinking. I’m a creative, arty farty type so I often find myself day dreaming about ideas and on my run to work today I started really thinking about how the game would change with round bases.

Straight up disclaimer: This is not a rumour thread and it is not a doom mongering post about how the sky is falling/obliterated/chaosified. This is a “What if?” post which will hopefully spark your imagination and get you hopeful for 9th edition.

The premise of this article is the assumption (my own assumption so don’t take this as gospel!) that 9th edition will be based upon the 40k ruleset , sharing common phases, principals and special rules. The reasons I think this is likely is from drawing parallels with Privateer Press’ Hordes/Warmachine rule sets. Both share common rules with tweaks and can feasible play against each other cross system. This has a number of benefits:

  •          Easier for players to jump between systems without worrying about reading an encyclopaedia of new rules. (sell more models)
  •          Easier for GW to update rules and more widely test them. (Less development cost/time)
  •          Less base stock/tooling (even plastic injection moulding tools need to be replaced with wear and tear, something people may not realise). (Less Stock/Tooling cost)
  •          The 40k system is in theory a much simpler game which has more focus on shooting and positioning of models.

I would assume that GW would find a way to make the ruleset work with square bases so as to not invalidate your collection (That is the optimist in me talking!). So for the 40k virgins out there I will summarise, very briefly, the differences and parallels. With a bit of imagination think how this would apply to fantasy:

  •         40k has 4 phases: Movement (NOT charges), Psychic (Magic), Shooting (Shooting!) and Assault (Charges AND Combat).
  •          40K works around the principal of Armour Penetration (AP) with all weapons having an AP value which negates armour of that value (eg AP3 negates 3+ armour but has no effect on 2+ armour). All weapons would need to be given these values and WYSIWYG becomes much more important.
  •          Units sizes are smaller and are more in line with 40K “squads”. This fits with the way GW sell boxes of fantasy models, eg boxes of 10-20 models which make up a squad but you need several to form hordes for example in 8th edition. In summary you will likely need less models to form an army.
  •         Unit types are different in some cases but can be roughly thought of as: Infantry=Infantry, Cav = Cav, Bikes = Monstrous Cav, Vehicles = Chariots, Monsters = Monsters etc etc...
  •         Everything is a skirmisher so the rule doesn’t exist! This may be different for 9th edition as they may encourage tighter knit but less manoeuvrable units.
  •         Shooting does not suffer modifiers for cover etc and you rolls straight against your BS (eg BS5 hits on 2s) and you are awarded a cover save for cover.
  •         Buildings/Terrain are more significant/widespread (more sales!).
  •         Games are more objective focused and less importance is placed on outright killing. Capturing objectives with scoring units (fortitude?!) and performing specific things in a turn (kill a monster) nets you objective points (TPs) and determines the winner.

Things might not be as bad as the internet thinks, I have played a few games of 40k and with some tweaks and creative rulings I think it could be a lot of fun. It would be starkly different but it could still represent large scale armies (round base movement trays ala LotR would be a requirement!) in a fun and cinematic way! So with this all in mind I’m going to try a game of fantasy with 40k core rules, fantasy stats and a whole lot of fudging!

I thought I'd do a little Time Tunnel piece here and show some of the pictures of my first ever tournament army. I'd never been to an event before I went to South Coast GT and this was the army I took. It was a seventh edition event and the army was dreadful, and I did terribly, but it was a great experience and it gave me a real boost to continue to paint.

Friday night I finished the medium version of Valten wielding Ghal Maraz. Reasonably happy with how he came out, the blues are probably the best bit but the face, armour and horse are not quite as good as I would like. Need more practise on small non ogre faces/models! Let me know what you think guys!
