2016 Hobby Plans!

Hey guys! So with new year coming up and a load of things I’m wanting to get done next year I thought it would be a great time to get my shit in order and write a list! 2015 was a pretty incredible year for me, have achieved tonnes personally and in the hobby including getting married!
  •        Paint up the Mierce Minatures War Daemon Model (Kruul/Krull) for Mike’s PaintingChallenge. Gonna go OTT with this and really do my best work. Long term plan is to have a sizeable Darklands army which will double as an AoS Chaos army (Fomoraic used as Beastmen/Warriors). I have a plan to go monster heavy with Be’lakor (Kruul) as my general, a Dragon Ogre Shaggoth, a Ghorgon, 12 Minotaurs, some Warriors, some Bestigors and war mammoth. Rough aim is to finish this army for this time next year.
  •        Horus Heresy: Short term paint up Sigismund, Alexis Pollux and a few other character models. Longer term build out a full 3000pt army with a rough aim of completing for WinterWar 2016. Same as above these will be my best possible work, need to do the models justice!!
  •       Necrons: Finish off all my unpainted models (totalling approx. 7500pts), kind of a ridiculous amount but im just really loving them at the moment. Want to have all the options available to be played with and one day play a monster game vs 2-3 friends AdMech armies to represent the Necrons rising up on Mars to crush the followers of the false machine god. The Void Dragon Rises!!! Hoping to complete this by the end of February.
  •      Terrain: Build and paint all my 40k/futuristic terrain, I have a bucket load to do and hope I can get it done by the end of January.
  •       Maybe some infinity if it tickles my fancy! I have a PanO starter set that I’m really tempted to paint up!

What are your hobby plans for 2016?

Happy New Year!
Rivet Wars - Cute and painted on a whim this year!

Well ok it’s a little bit early but late December is all about looking back and then looking forward.  Being a hobby oriented blog then you can probably guess what’s coming… Resolutions!

2015 Resolutions

Hobby resolutions 2015 Q3 Update:

  • Finish epic Eldar 3000pts list – Done Q1
  • Base Brets – Done Q1
  • Paint 50pts Relic Knights – Done Q1
  • Assemble guild ball teams, paint 1 team – Done Q2
  • Paint all Malifaux figs – done Q3
The discontinued goals:

Due to WFB blowing up in the middle of the year I rage quit a couple of projects

  • Finish WoC (3 chariots, 4 skullcrushers, disclord and hell cannon)
  • Finish empire (10 Demis, mounted wizbang)
Their replacements done in Q4:

  • Rebase TK – Done. 30+ MoComp scrolls worth of stuff so far but I'd like to get a lot more of the army onto rounds for AoS to open up options.
  • Guild Ball – Done. Smashed my way through all 4 teams from S1 which I’d kept and only bought Compound from S2 so far.  Imagine I’ll be getting Vennin, Hoist and Tenderiser plus all the Captains & Mascots for teams I have.

Guildball - Alchemists

  • Paint a Darklands force – Mostly done and only held back due to an Element Games screw up on stock.  I’ve one more model I’m waiting for to be able to complete a 2000 gold army.  Admittedly it’s only 13ish models due to being all large monstrous infantry and monsters but was awesome fun to paint.

Darklands - Kthones

Paint up a Frostgrave warband – done the 10 models required for it out of my Reaper Bones collection.

In total I’ve ended up at 219 models painted across the year painting on all systems. I might try and get through the last monster for my Darklands force just so I can call it done. He's most of the way there now but a little bit left to do.

Darklands - Kadamaster 6" long crocodile!

So generally successful year though falling a ways short of the one model per day target I’ve aimed for in the past, though I very intentionally didn’t aim for that this year. As I’ve been running these logs for a while this will be the first time in 5 years where I’ve fallen behind on a running total.  Total days in the last 5 years: 1,826, total models painted: 1,777.

Ok so 2015 has been a success though my volume of production is down (not necessarily a bad thing as it means I’ve been painting to a higher standard).

2016 Resolutions

So what do I forsee as being my gaming for the next year?  First off a quick look back shows I’ve only played guildball and one game of AoS since May.  Looks like I’ve moved away from my traditional gaming grounds but find myself working on a far more diverse range of games despite not actually playing them.

I’m totally cool with this to be honest.  Variety of models is something that really keeps me motivated and working, if I was just churning armies I imagine I’d be burnt out far sooner.  This second half of 2015 where I was doing a whole variety of stuff has been fantastic.

That said there are a few ‘bigger’ projects on my list for 2016:

·         Horus Heresy – I bought the Calth box so have 38 models to paint from that, I’ll be doing them as Alpha legion and probably adding a bunch more stuff on top.

30k - Alpha Legion

·         Saga – I bought a Scots warband as a pretty cheap deal mid last year, the models aren’t spectacular but look decent enough that I’m wanting to get them all painted up.

·         Darklands – I backed the KS for both Albainn and Erainn and then subsequently ordered a bunch of other parts for my Kthones.  As these turn up through the year I want to get them all painted up.

Mierce - Albainn Giant

·         Old School Dwarf rebasing & painting project.  I’ve got an army’s worth of 3rdEd Warhammer dwarfs mostly painted but a few gaps in the army but all of these are on squares.  I’m going to transfer them all over to round bases for AoS and paint up a few more of the lovely old models that I’ve had sat for ages.

Oldschool dwarfs - Rebasing

·         Epic – Think I want to paint up some Orks, I did an Eldar army last year but still want a few more additions for it but think I need a second army just cos.

·         Guild Ball – Paint the S2 models I deem worthy of purchase.  At present this is Tenderiser, Venin & Hoist, plus all new captains & Mascots for my teams.  So 11 models in total.

·         Rivet Wars – This is an odd little one that actually I can blame my son for.  The box was sat in my cupboard and when he sneaked off and got into my study one day (usually kept closed) he picked out the Rivet Wars box and carried it through to the lounge and got out some toy soldiers to play with.  Now rivet wars is actually just about the perfect thing for him to have picked out as it’s as close to army men as you’ll find.  But then because it was out a friend questioned why I hadn’t painted it, ‘because it’s a board game’ was my answer but then he planted that seed so I did a model just cos and was really good fun and pretty quick to do.  So now I’m tempted to paint the lot!

Rivet Wars - Allies

·         Frostgrave Random Encounters – Again going to continue to utilise my Reaper bones stuff for this, it’s basically an excuse to paint a few different models when I fancy a change.

Beyond this there will no doubt be whatever whims take my fancy along the way but with all that I reckon I’ve the best part of 200 models to paint without even touching the epic stuff which I need to look though and pick out a force.  Which is basically a year’s worth of painting.

Speed Painted Necrons: The Cult of the Destroyer

$

So last night I managed to complete my Necron Destroyer cult for my Speed Painted Necron army. Quite happy with how these came out and how quickly I can get a formation painted for the table! Obviously not my best work but

The Destroyer cult is one of the best formations in the codex, giving all of the destroyers re roll to wound and armour penetration rolls making them incredibly good at gunning down vehicles and marines. Destroyers come with preferred enemy anyway so they also re roll 1s to hit which when hitting on 3s, wounding on 3s with re rolls (AP3 strength 5 weapons) they absolutely shred marines. Against vehicles fishing for Gauss 6s to glance means you can hull point down even land raiders with relative ease. A great combo is mixing destroyers with a Triarch Stalker to bump them up to BS 5 and thus hitting on 2s with re rolls!

Here are a couple lists I have been bouncing about with a maxed out destroyer cult (very shooty!) with a unit of Lychguard to act as my combat deterent/hammer. I still love Zahndrek, he is an utter force multiplier and in maelstrom or objective based games he is insanely useful. His bubble of re roll 1s to hit with shooting (if he switches warlord trait) is a bit wasted but conqueror of citys (stealth ruins) can be massive in keeping you army alive. Manipulting reserves (yours or your enemies) can also be very tasty. A nice combo is dropping the Destroyer lord into a shooting or combat unit to bestow preferred enemy (everything!) can be really nice too. Lychguard for example benefit massively from it in combat.

My second list has a smaller destroyer cult but has squeezed in a cheeky Canoptek harvest which is a great combo with the Destroyer Lord joining the wraiths to give them preferred enemy and some guaranteed High Strength Ap2 attacks at a different initiative step. He can also tank some S10 attacks to prevent the wraiths being killed instantly if they fail their 4++ or reanimation save.

So its that time of year and stock taking is on the mind and planning for 2016 and I decided to count up what I have painted and unpainted for my Necrons so I can plan. I have already completed 65-75% of the army with the bulk of the infantry complete. The below shouldn't take me too long to complete and half of the unpainted stuff is already sprayed sliver and washed already!

Obviously this is a ridiculously large army but it does give me buckets of options when playing and I absolutely love the necron army play style and fluff feel. Also with a bit of jiggery pokery I can tweak the army down to 7500pts and spread out the formations for a huge game one day! Hoping I can organise a game vs 3-4 AdMech armies to play a narrative game on my new board (terrain WIP) to represent the necrons rising up on Mars!

New year resolutions that I will totally stick to. Honest!

I have been meaning to do a blog for better part of a year and seeing as its the time of the year where you make plans that you probably won't keep, I thought I better do a new year resolution list I can not stick to for 2016 :)

First I thought I would look back on this year and see what I achieved with the hobby. Painting wise I had a burst of motivation in the summer knocking out quite a lot compared to my usual output. This was mainly due to buying a house and a dog who didn't like being upstairs where my PC was (main distraction) So what I managed to paint was

Brythoniaid Army

2 Pre-heresy Space Wolf Terminators

Som'er Teeth Jones
After this burst of creativity I discovered the Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt and everything sort of stopped hobby wise.  I did recently paint this up though.
Add caption

So on to them resolutions for 2016.

Darklands.
I am going to the Sheffield Slaughter at the start of feb and need to have this done for then.

Prifdyndraig, currently half painted
Prifdynwocor, currently half painted.
A 2nd Cawrdraig Draigllai
Draigllai, big dragon (not the biggest though)
Sagart, wizard bloke from Albainn Kindred
3 Oghurithne, monstrous infantry unit.

After they are done I have a few projects I want to start, continue, finish. I will be adding to this as I believe Darklands will be my main Tournament game going forward.

Pre-Heresy Space Wolves.
This is the big one. I want to do a large army of this. I already have 90 marines (30 Mk 3 armour, 30 Mk 4 from the Horus Heresy box and 30 space wolves to mix and match in with them.) Also have 10 Terminators, 1 Predator, 1 Dreadnought and 3 Characters. I won't be buying anything else for this army until what I have is painted.

Malifaux.
I played a bit of first ed and want to get back into it. I have the Viktoria crew and extras to paint that will be my first crew, I also fancy the Kirai Crew and already started on the Gremlins.

40k
I was going through all the codex's and army books i have and came across the Catachan supplement, so after looking through that I bought 11 of them off eBay. This will be a see how they come out and may buy more afterwards thing.
I also would like to start a Cult of Speed Ork army as this used to be my main 40k army back in the day.

Guild Ball.
I bought a brewers team, would like to get it painted but this is low on the priorities list.

Age of Sigmar.
Feel dirty just trying that. As Fantasy was horribly murdered, butchered, slaughtered even earlier in the year and we have been left with this shell of a game I thought I might as well be a total hypocrite and paint up a skaven army for it, because as anyone who knows me that's my default thing, When in doubt, paint some rats.

I hope to achieve all of this by setting myself the task of doing minimum half an hour of hobby each day. I believe this is very doable but we shall see as the year goes on. Ofc i know a lot of this will not get done but my main goals are the Darklands and Space wolves at this point.

Wish me luck.

"NECROMANCER" by seyerlerver
This is one of those classic clampack minis that GW released years ago.  It's also just a fantastic sculpt.  The flow of the lines and the motion of the figure really conjure a gothic image even in just bare plastic.  With a nice color scheme (as eyerlerver has used here) it just oozes menace.  The stark highlights really push the look and draw your eye to the shadows, furthering the feeling of the sculpt.  The bone and wood color of the top pic really helps to balance out the figure by providing a warm contrast to the cloak and shadow of the necromancer.  This in turn makes the necromancer feel unnatural by comparison.  The figure seems completely at home in the filthy bare ground of its' base, bearing no earthly wealth, simply unnatural power.
"Witchhunter" by  Laurent " Werewolf " Exposito Mas
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/8739
Another great mini straight out of the package.  Laurent has used a nice color scheme here to bring out a bit about this witch hunter.   Little touches that tell a story definitely help to establish an atmosphere for a painted miniature, placing it in space and allowing your mind to absorb some artistic shorthand.  The green and yellow pants ground the fig in the GW Empire (Stir River Patrol if I'm not mistaken) but the uncolored leather jacket tells a different story.  It allows the character to be somewhat nondescript if he chooses . The gold skull buttons and gems on the sword show a bit of wealth, and the brightly colored feathers in separate colors from the pants hint at a personal pride of the hunter himself as well.  A clean and nicely painted miniature allows the mind to dwell on the story in a way that tabletop standard doesn't.
"High Elf Prince Standard Bearer" by Javier González; "Arsies"
http://www.puttyandpaint.com/projects/8735
Speaking of non tabletop standard..  Javier has created an incredible atmospheric piece!
First off, this is quite the nice kitbash! Valten's horse mixed with the prince from the griffon in the IoB set.  The different techniques that Javier has used really "sell" the atmosphere of this piece.  The smooth blending on the neck of the horse contrasting with the rough texture of the rock, the smooth billowing of the cloth, and the bright reflective metal.  As opposed to the witch hunter in the previous picture, this fig oozes wealth.  Not only the banner, but the cloak, and the underside of the caparison show care and quality.  The lavish gold accents contrast so well with the blue fabric, selling the idea that the warrior who bears this banner is a man worthy of its' lineage.

2015 Painting in summary (graph) form:

Burn Rate

I was quick out the blocks in January and then fairly steady progress across the year but running at a slower rate than 1/day average but I'm happy that I was painting to a generally higher standard than in prior years.

Monthly split of painting by game system

As you meander through the year you can see I was never entirely focused on one system but there were bouts of focus on different systems at diff times.
Jan: Epic
Feb -Apr: WFB
May - Sep: Guildball & Malifaux
Oct-Dec: Frostgrave, Darklands & AoS

Total split by type

Pretty much as you'd expect the majority of stuff has still been infantry, a reasonable smattering of cavalry at the start of the year for the Brets and a heap of Monsterous stuff for Darklands makes up the bulk of it and of course the Epic stuff at the start of the year.

Split by system

This one is probably the biggest change from prior year, I'd guess this was 90%+ WFB the last few years, this year with AoS I basically hit the brakes on WFB/AoS for 6m and focussed entirely on other systems until starting to pick it up again in December.

In total that was 220 figs across the year, this year I'm going to try and hit the 1/day again as a couple of other folk I know through twitter are targeting it too so some friendly rivalry.  Obviously that sort of target requires a bit of a strategic approach and some focus.  So from my resolutions blog I'd highlighted the armies/systems I was going after which immediately kicks out about 200 models, the rest can probably be filled in with Epic stuff.

Epic is a slightly cheaty way of getting the model count up as the smaller scale means it's actually generally less detailed painting and you can get away with basecoat, wash, edge highlight and a few key details picked out.

I had planned on doing one of my Orks/Nids and probably a bunch more Eldar stuff but last night I painted up a Space Marine Landraider in the Ultramarines paint scheme just to try out some new Scale 75 paints I'd picked up.  I really liked how it turned out so I think I'll do an Epic smurf army as my first project for the year.  Also decided to see how it would look with some weathering, generally I think epic can look good as clean/crisp paintjobs but want to try out weathering before I get to the 30k army and this seemed like a nice place to start getting some experience.

An Exercise in Stubbornness - Painting the Glottkin

$
0
0

Over Christmas and the New Year I finally finished up painting my Glottkin from Games Workshop. This was not really a fun project though. It was more a labour of stubbornness. I really don't like to have half finished projects, especially after I had spent £65 on the model. I bought the model in October 2014 when it was released with the End Times book. I put the model together for a big 8th Edition game that I organised at Warhmmer World that Christmas and I had airbrushed on all the initial green for the base. After that, however, the model just sat on the shelf for about 10 months...

With the release go Age of Sigmar I have been playing my Slaanesh Warriors quite considerably and I decided that I should be able to get the model finished and ready for the Bad Dice Podcast Blood and Glory event. So with a spark of motivation I got started again. In the end I managed to get Ghurk fully finished. He really is a beast to paint with all the boils and wounds. It gave me a great excuse to try out Blood for the Blood God and the Nurgles Rot paint from the GW technical range. These are great paints. I found that I got results that I liked by painting things in very light colours and then painting these over the top so they gave a shiny, slimy look but retaining some of the highlighting and shading underneath. I also found that the Nurgles Rot in particular works well if you mix the cases in to get darker tones.

However, despite getting Ghurk finished I ended up just base coating and washing Otto and Ethrac. And then the next spanner in the works happened.... Games Workshop released Archaon! I knew if I started this guy I wouldn't get round to finishing the remaining two characters so I started battling my way through them. I started working on Otto who is very similar to the Nurgle Chaos Lord which was great model to paint. This was notable for a fun exercise in painting a mottled, pale skin. I wanted to keep him as pale as possible to contrast and stand out from Ghurks darker green. The dark green shoulder pads help to pull the model together.

Ethrac originally had a dirty yellow tabard and cloak, but this looked ridiculous so I ended up base coating whole thing in dark purples. I am much happier with this as the purple compliments the green and also allows the pale skin to stand out. On Ethrac I used the pale green for the skin again but also used a paler version for the growths and extra arm. This was done with Rakarth flesh and washed with Athenian Camoshade. Again it was the details at the ned that I got fed up - things like the staff and brazier really didn't receive the attention they deserved.

Overall I didn't enjoy this model and there are a number of things I am not happy with - the number of mood lines I didn't fill properly, the highlighting on the horns, the base (which just looks too thin), and the fact that every time I picked up the Glottkin he just didn't inspire me. However I do think that overall he fits well in my army and I am pleased I was able to battle through and finish it despite all the other things I'd rather have been doing!

Hey guys, Happy new year!

I managed to get a good blast of painting in over the holidays and finished my Darklands, Mierce Minatures War Daemon/Kruul (http://mierce-miniatures.com/index.php?act=pro&pre=mrm_dkl_inf_dis_wld_101_000)for Mike’s Painting Challenge. Will be using the model in Age of Sigmar variously as Be’lakor (my favourite cheeky Daemon Prince in the story!), a Bloodthirster or Skarbrand. I will eventually use him in Darklands one day too once the rules are out and I have a wee army ready to go. Overall very happy with him and it’s such an awesome model! I have included plenty WiP pics for you to have a look at.

Sci Fi War Gaming Scenery Test - Mantic Dead Zone

Hey guys! I have been working on my Mantic Deadzone terrain to get a nice wee gaming table for 40k. The assembly was a much bigger under taking than I had anticipated but I am powering through nicely. I decided to have a try at painting a small ruined building I had made. Was super easy and fast (as the whole project will hopefully be!):

Spray Grey
Dry Brush White
Paint Silver
Wash Silver Black
Pick out Orange Panelling (will maybe try a few other colours on other buildings)
Wash Orange Panelling
Sponge Brown on large area
Sponge Dark brown inside above area
Sponge Black inside above area
Dry Brush Silver in a few areas

Complete!! This process took me next to no time (maybe 5 minutes total) so I should be able to power through the whole set in a day or two (building and painting) later in the month! The only other stage I might add would be some OSL blue lights using an air brush when I take the terrain round to Scott’s in a few months. Anyway let me know what you think guys!

Guildball Fishermen: Sakana and Team Finished

$

0

Hey guys! So I managed to get some painting in over the weekend and painted my final Guildball Fisherman model, Sakana the season 2 new model. There has definitely been a marked improvement in the sculpt quality in the season two models (Season 1 masons have to be the dullest models I have ever painted!) and Sakana is probably one of my favourite (Fishermen are actually probably the coolest season 1 team except maybe alchemists (see James Esland’s amazing team!)).

Was fun to paint a one off small model after all the batch and massive model painting I have been doing recently and tried to do a good job on the skin and teal to give some nice transitions. Overall very happy with team but still haven’t managed to play a proper game yet! Will have to try and squeeze one in!

Regardless though I am thinking about selling the team so if you want to make an offer I have put up an EBay advert here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391361896393?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649. Ill include the cards and fishermen/guildball tokens I have if you want them!

Necromunda - first steps with a classic

$

My gaming group have been talking about doing a Necromunda campaign for a while now but have never got round to it.  Now, with the death of 8th, a New Year and James' (@Gas_Monkey82) frenetic terrain-building over the summer break here, it looks like 2016 could be our year.

So John (@parttimer_jw) and I decided to get in a game with our work in progress gangs to get the hang of the rules. This was John's first game and my second, so we entered with little knowledge except that which I had gained from my first game against James' Van Saar - cover is everything if you want your guys to stay alive!

Escher - my trial list

I've had an Escher gang box set since the mid-90s so opened it and painted it quickly in some bright colours at the end of last year. I haven't tried to make the models WYSIWYG at this stage because who knows if we actually stick to it and what I might want to use for the campaign.

The list below is the one I used against John and, as you can see, it contains at least one major error (gangers can't have flamers).

  • Leader - chains word, plasma pistol, flamer
  • Heavy - heavy stubber, lasgun
  • Heavy - lasgun
  • Ganger - sword, lasgun
  • Ganger - sword, shotgun, man-stopper
  • Ganger - sword, shotgun
  • Ganger - sword, autopistol
  • Ganger - sword, flamer, autopistol
  • Juve - autopistol

The thinking behind my roster was to split the gang into a fire base - the two heavies and the lasgun ganger - and the assault team armed with shotguns, swords and other delightful close weapons. I went for two heavies to start because I read on the Internet that that is a good idea and stuck with 9 gang members in order to keep the gang's upkeep cost in a lower bracket. However, having played two games I do feel like I'm missing another meat shield Juve.
If anyone has some constructive criticism, I'd be more than welcome to hear it.

    Cawdor - the opposition

John brought a very flame happy and appropriate Cawdor gang to the table for his first game. I'm fairly sure that every model that could be armed with a hand flamer received one :)

    Setting up the table

One of the key attractions for me of Necromunda is the terrain. A well-constructed, multi-levelled and detailed board is a dream to play on and I always find myself browsing pictures of great boards online (see nickeninja's blog for one great example). This is what we came up with on the night with what we had to hand - some Mantic Deadzone terrain, some Sarissa Precision terrain and my collection of scatter terrain scavenged from old computers and household objects, including some Cadbury Favourites tin towers from Christmas. There is a lot of work to go into the board from here but it is good enough for our practice games.

Given that we were testing out the rules, John and I rolled up the territories for our gangs.  I got a holestead, tunnels, archeotech, mineral outcrop and slag (generally poor apart from the tunnels which could allow me to deploy 3 of my gang in close range of John's gang).  John managed to get a much better selection in general, including Friendly Doc which would prove particularly handy later on.

    Scenario and Deployment

We rolled up the Gang Fight scenario, John deployed first and I got first turn.
John deployed first in two groups, his fire base and his assault party, but making the fatal error of leaving his heavy and gangers without cover and standing on top of a tower.

With all of John's hand flamers, using the tunnels was not particularly attractive as my gangers would meet flames on arrival.

I split my gang in three:
    • two heavies in cover with line of sight to his heavy;
    • an assault party of my leader, two shotgun gangers and a Juve to cross the walkway across to his fire base; and
    • a secondary team to draw out and deal with his guys on the ground (the illegal flamer ganger, and two other gangers with a lasgun, pistol and sword).

    The gangs deployed.

    John splits his forces.

John's heavy takes out my lasgun heavy out of action first turn.

Enraged by the loss of her friend, my heavy returns fire with her heavy stubber to great effect. My heavy would spend the rest of the game chipping away at the Cawdor fire base.

Largely free from the threat of John's fire base my assault party goes for a dash across the gangway.

The second half of John's gang advances behind cover while my gangers wait for him to try and close with the hand flamers.

By this point, my gang had taken 5 of John's gang down or out of action, however he passed his bottle test with ease.

I then lost two of my gang (to go with the heavy out of action in the first turn), and failed my first bottle test.  My gang obviously has no stomach for a fight.

    The aftermatch

While I had lost the fight, John's gang came off far worse once injuries were taken into account.  His heavy and his ganger died and were harvested for organs by his Friendly Doc.  Another rather unfortunate ganger, lost an arm, went deaf, got an old battle wound and got captured and sold to slavers (given his injuries, I'm surprised I got 20 credits for him :p ). You've got to love the character of this game.

Thankfully my heavy made a full recovery, my juve recovered from being down, and I only had a ganger with shell shock.

All in all it was a fun introduction to a classic GW game and we'll definitely be trying for a campaign this year.

    Mike Callaghan

I decided to paint Gamla Bror from Darklands Norse faction. I just loved the model and wanted to make a start on my Norse. It was also very different to most of what I've painted up until now so I wanted a different challenge.

    Kev Low

Theoden King first model for my SBG Rohirrim . Dave Reid's excellent coverage of his Stirling Hobbit tournament got me going. Also, I like that with LOTR there is a fantasy background that GW can't f#ck up.

    Rich Payne

I bought it and it looked pretty! Wanted to try a new big model to start the new year and kick start my Chaos AoS army!

    Greig Summers

Been wanting to do a Black Templars army for a while. There's something about xenophobic, crusading knights that really appeals! I read Helsreach by Aaron Dembski-Bowden and it focused on Grimaldus. He came across as such a hardass, even by Black Templar standards. I had to have him lead my army.

    Amy Snuggs

I think this was my favourite model I have ever painted! I have never really liked Chaos models, I have always painted the good guys, but this one just stood out instantly for me. It's a beautiful sculpt, so much lovely detail and I really wanted to spend my time on it and make it look the best I possibly could. I wanted it to be the best model I have ever painted and I honestly believe it is. I feel my painting has improved and I've learnt a lot just from painting him, it's been so much fun. I wanted to challenge myself, I used to always think I could never paint massive models and before I got him as a Christmas gift I was a bit daunted about the prospect of painting him and doing the beautiful model justice. I also used the opportunity to improve my blending and I'm really happy with how it came out in the sword and the horns. I leapt to the challenge and I'm so happy I did it because it was so much fun painting him and I'm so happy with how he turned out! 😄

Evil sunz logo long oop from forgeworld. Just because. Ork fan, looked fun, picked it up cheap! Something utterly different

    Dave Reid

Few reasons why I chose Legolas to paint.
    1. I wanted to add him to my Grey Company force 2. He's one of my favourite LOTR characters 3. He was the first LOTR hero I painted in 2006 so wanted to see how much I'd improved in 10 years

    Dave Fraser

Model is Gomagg by Mierce Miniatures, he's an Albainn Giant. The model stands about 8" tall so a bit of a beast, just thought he looked so awesome I really wanted to paint him up before the Metal Age KS turned up.

    Bishmeister

Darklands Vaak, never tried paining ice before, never used snow effects and first Mierce model I have painted

    Rich (@gamingking1616)

New project for me after Xmas. Fed up with painting red or blue so tried greens. Always wanted one so got it for Xmas but thinking of doing 2 more for the detachment then maybe 2 others for the army. Got the painting scheme off of the freeblade game

Hey guys, just chucking up a post of some awesome imperial fist images I found while trawling google to give me some inspiration for my 30k army due to be started soon :) I'm going to try and take some of the ideas from each of the below and meld together for my force. Pretty happy with how the basing came along on the two praetors I did a month ago and I'm happy with my yellow technique.
    • So learning points from the pictures, decent sized areas of black break up the yellow well.
    • Black helmets for some of the infantry will look good.
    • White helmets for the veterans/sergeants seems a good idea
    • Red Helmets for the Veteran/Terminator sergeants also looks good
    • Blue is a the correct energy/light colour to contrast with the scheme.
    • Might steer away from green in my pallet... need to decide what colour to paint the wreathes on a lot of the models?
    • Hazard stripes/checkers look good, will dot this in as and where to denote separate units or specific models/cowling.
    • The inverted silver/yellow scheme does look amazing (see Lil Legend Sigismund below) but does it break up my scheme too much? The templar brethren and Sigismund would be the only models painted like this?
    • I need to man up and do weathering on the tanks and dreadnoughts!

    Necromunda - Escher/Cawdor rematch

    $

So after having so much fun in our first game, John and I decided we had to have a rematch.

We started with new gangs for two reasons:

    1. John's gang had largely met an untimely and unhappy end at the hands of my gang in the first game due to some horrible rolling on the serious injuries table.
    2. My list had an illegal flamer and other nonsense that needed to be fixed.

    John's rewrite

John basically decided that adding a hired gun - an underhive scum - would be a good investment early in a campaign and so wanted to try him out.  Now underhive scum roll up their characteristics when recruited and John seemed to do very well.  The scum rocked up with +2BS, +1I , +2Ld and Gunfighter - BS5 and the ability to fire both his pistols in one turn - ouch!

John set the scene for the fight: Hans Obrix stood looking over the gantries that formed the outskirts of the Escher territory.  Today would be a day for righteous vengeance.  Today the Cleansing Flame would act to protect the impressionable minds of the underhive.

He had caught his son, Brunna Obrix, looking at images put out by the Neon Clash gang.  Lurid, provocative images desgned to bring them wealth while bringing corruption on the hive.  This problem would be burnt out today.  Hans had found that within this part of the underhive there were 6 collections of images which the high priest had ordered Hans to bring to him.  He had explained that destroying them in situ would be easier However the High Priest wisely knew that he must see the filthy, craven images and be solely responsible for their destruction.

    Introducing the Neon Clash

So, in re-birth my gang now has names.  They are the Neon Clash and have been given suitably girl band names:

Roxy (Leader) - Chainsword, Plasma Pistol, Flamer
Jinx (Heavy) - Heavy Stubber, Lasgun
    Brittany (Heavy) - Flamer, Autopistol
    Foxy (Ganger) - Sword, Lasgun
    Glitter (Ganger) - Sword, Shotgun
Sparx (Ganger) - Sword, Shotgun, Laspistol
    Gem (Ganger) - Sword, Laspistol
Stardust (Ganger) - Sword, Shotgun, Laspistol
    Jet (Juve) - Autopistol

The fluff behind the gang will come as we build to the campaign.

    Scenario and Deployment

Having played a straight gang fight the first time around, we decided to play the Scavengers scenario.  D6 loot counters to claim, and a monster which will attack the most isolated model in the enemy gang on the roll of a 6 at the start of your opponent's turn.  Sadly the monster never appeared, nor did anyone get dragged to their doom.

John and I both rolled up territories that gave us special deployment rules (John got vents and I got tunnels).  These meant that we could deploy up to 3 gang members at the end of our first turn, anywhere on the board (at ground level for tunnels or above ground for vents), as long as we were more than 8" away from the enemy gang.  We both decided that would be a good idea as it would allow us to get close to some of the loot tokens quickly.

    Table set up

Making use of my new "landing pad" (aka a piling post from the hardware store)

Loot set-up - all in the middle of the table and spread over different heights.

Gangs deployed (apart from vents and tunnels) - heavies staring off at each of from the towers with the rest of the gangs in the middle to converge on the landing pad and its tokens.

John's gangers deploy through their vents to seize the landing pad, keep an eye on my gang should they appear from hiding and seize the first counter.

My Roxy (leader), Glitter (shotgun ganger) and Jet (juve) deploy from the tunnels near my supporting gangers and the loot under the landing pad.

Now the following picture encapsulates the true narrative opportunities in Necromunda.  John's juve picked up the loot (obviously encouraged by the two gangers nearby and keen to make an impression) and then jumped off into the pool of water below.  Unfortunately for the juve, he would pay the price and go down.  While John was able to collect the loot off the juve's prone body with another ganger in later turns, the juve would ultimately succumb to his injuries and died.  A big sacrifice from the juve.

John's older and wiser ganger decided it was safer to make the jump down from the landing pad in stages...

My gang start moving to collect the loot on our side of the board, while the ganger moves along the bridge to draw out the hand flamer.

The aforementioned hand-off of the loot from the dying juve to the ganger.

Having secured two of the three loot counters on his side of the board, John's gang set up in overwatch to stop my gang advancing into charge range or finishing off the dying juve.  Given the number of casualties that John had taken by now, I had no incentive to advance and could wait for John to fail a bottle test while firing pot-shots with my heavy.

My gang had now secured the three objectives in our half and had no desire to test John's guns, especially those of the scum with BS5 and two pistols.

My heavy again performed well taking out John's fire base up on the tower.

Sadly, I wasn't as careful with my movement as I'd hoped and both Roxy my leader and Stardust came under fire.

Roxy  survived with just a flesh wound from the scum's plasma pistol but my Stardust went down to John's heavy.

Before we could resolve the Mexican stand-off that was developing, John's gang bottled out and the Neon Clash were left holding 3 sets of loot compared to John's 2.

    The post-game

John still can't roll on the serious injuries table.  John lost a ganger and the juve, while again his heavy got multiple injuries (old battle wounds, captured and survives against all odds).

The delicious irony of the post-battle sequence was that John's leader was offered a grave chute as a rare trade - an item that could have saved the juve from his fate, had it come in time.

Having decided he is cursed, and that his models more closely suit scavies, John will be giving them a run as the scavy, scaly, mutants of the Underhive.

Stardust, who had been downed by the heavy, made a full recovery while my poor juve Jet also went out of action with multiple injuries (old battle wound, captured, deaf, survives against all odds).

Now John and I couldn't work out how survives against all odds is supposed to work with the captured result so we just swapped models (as if they had survived or been exchanged).  If anyone knows how those results are supposed to work together please let me know.

I also managed to do rather well with generating credits and experience - picking up some flak armour and increased ballistic skill for my heavy, Jinx, and Foxy and increased toughness for my leader.

    Closing thoughts

Its a small sample, but I'm interested in how much Necromunda seems to be skewed towards shooting.  In our two games we have had zero close combat.  Now this maybe because we were ultra-cautious, or because we still did not have enough terrain to allow our gangs to close without risking dying in a hail of bullets.

Definitely looking forward to testing out more when our campaign starts in March.  We could have up to 8 gangs which would be great.

    Painting Archaon - Part 1

I've recently started to get the big man, Archaon, ready for the South Coast GT in April. He really is a beast of a model and I need to make him tie into my existing warriors army. Therefore I have not been able to follow the excellent Warhammer TV article by Duncan Rhodes like others! However it does have some great tips which I have been employing for different parts of the model.

The first thing you notice is how big the model is! He really is tricky to handle and apply paint to so I knew I would need to break out the airbrush to get him going!

For my warriors I always start with a bright silver undercoat from the Humbrol acrylic range. It gives a really smooth and even base coat that I can work over and it is a key part of the metallic sheen that my warriors have.

The first coat is a dark purple, followed by a a couple of successive lighter coats. This just goes over the back and legs and should leave the underside still silver. I then start to give the model a serious dry brush using a really big soft brush with some lighter purples, and in this case I also went over the back with some Wrack White from GW's Dry range which is a terrific paint. The whole model is then washed with Druchi Violet mixed with loads of Lahmian Medium.

The next step for me was to start adding the green on the underside of the wings. I try to keep this thin so the metallic still shines through. The first stage is a mid green and then a dark Vallejo Air green going on the outer parts.

After this I was able to use the GW video for the tail, but I changed the colours to match my army. Basically I dry brushed on a lot of silver on the tail and then faded in the very ends using greens to match the accent colour I have used across the army.

After this I detailed up the armour plates with the Rakarth flesh to White that I always use. I think this looks great with the purple which is why it has been the secondary colour on the army. I vary the washes but always highlight up with Palyd Wych Flesh to white. I use this for all the whites, so you'll start to see this on the wing membranes and on other areas around the model.

The black armour will match the armour on Archaon himself. All the skulls and hair are just done using the same colours as mentioned before. The Stormcast skulls are just any old gold recipe.

The wings are probably the part I am looking forward to least as they are a real struggle to get right. I have ended up basing mine with rakarth flesh and then airbrushing on some browns before dry brushing with the Wrack White. To start building up definition I am carefully pin washing along the edges of the veins and in the deeper areas using lots of medium to keep it all really smooth. I am pretty pleased with the work so far.

Hey guys! So I went on a bit of (crazy) hobby binge over the weekend: I built and painted all of this….in 20hrs… :D Can’t explain how happy this terrain and scenery makes me! It is going to be so much fun playing on the table with fully painted armies for 40k,30k, infinity and maybe even some necromunda! Was really easy and quick to paint this using sprays, washes and sponges. I have used the Mantic Deadzone terrain (it is all from one Quadrant pack) (http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/mantic-scenery-and-terrain/sci-fi-urban/product/battlezones-sci-fi-urban-quadrant.html) , two Games Workshop Promethium pipe relays (http://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Promethium-Relay-Pipes) and a frontline gaming FATMAT (http://eustore.frontlinegaming.org/fat-mat%3A-industrial-6x4/dp/66). Hoping to get plenty of themed narrative games on the table with the guys this year!
You can find a tutorial on how I painted the terrain here:  http://paint-hammer.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/sci-fi-war-gaming-scenery-test-mantic.html
Let me know what you guys think!

    Ultrasonic cleaner and stripping paint

Just a short note to say I can recommend using an ultrasonic cleaner for making stripping painted models quicker and easier.

I've previously used Simple Green in a pot (because Biostrip and others don't have NZ stockists).  However, I quickly got downhearted at the amount of time needed to scrub the models with a brush and the pile of old metals needing attention.  So I decided to give a cheap ultrasonic cleaner a try to make the mountain bearable.

My current method is to soak the models in undiluted brown Dettol overnight and put the ultrasonic cleaner on for 3 X 480 second cycles. Then it just takes ~5 seconds per model to remove the gloopy paint.

    Viola.

Now I can't compare this method to Biostrip, but I'm happy with the results :)
